Finding the Right House Movers Can Make or Break Your Next Transition

Casey Quinn
With the world getting smaller, more people find themselves packing up and moving more frequently in their lifetimes. Additionally, with the real estate market in its current rollercoaster ride from extremely high prices to dropping below normal values, people have found themselves leaving to more stable locations where their money may purchase more land. No matter if its packing up though to head off to college, home from college, to your first apartment, first house or any subsequent move, the process is stressful and expensive. Hiring the right mover for your trip can make all of the difference.

It is not a process that can be taken lightly or you will find your goods broken or worst, gone completely. Planning a move takes time to do research to find the right mover to help you that is reliable and has a good reputation. The best thing you can get is a friend's recommendation where you have a real experience the movers do a quality job. Without a personal experience, the next step is to comb the phone book and find a local mover to help you. Using local movers is the best solution - avoid larger companies they will pick up your furniture and boxes, unload it in a warehouse where it will sit and then be reloaded at a future time.
This extra round of handling will result in increased chances of your memories being broken.

One thing to avoid is using broker service like Movers.com or 123movers.com these places will collect a premium for finding you a mover but they do not take any responsible for the quality of the work nor are they selective for which companies can join their service. This results in you paying more for simply being too lazy to look in a phone book or the web. Avoid middle tiers and do the research yourself.

Once you have found a few local movers, do search on the web for them. Search on their company name and be sure to read any and every thread that mentions the information. If you find any bad references, skip them and move on. Do not take a chance with a mover if they have any bad references, they are a dime a dozen so need to force it. Once you think you have found a good one, go check out the Better Business Bureau at bbb.com and validate they are a legitimate company and a member in good standing. If not, again skip them and move on for another mover.

Contact the mover was you have found one that passes your rounds of research and setup the appointment. Good movers will be booked pretty far in advance so leave yourself room in order to get the right mover instead of settling for an unknown mover who runs the risk of ruining everything you own. Always get the insurance and make sure to read the fine print. Insurance doesn't cover the value of your items; it covers the weight of the items. So a gold necklace is only worth the weight of the necklace not the gold itself. Therefore be smart about what you have a mover take and what you bring with you personally.

Be sure to be home when they pack and be happy with the quality of their work. If not, speak up! Remember they work for you. You can fire them if you are not happy and get someone else. Don't be pressured or bullied by a moving company instead be the boss of the situation and make your next move a successful and low stress one by hiring respectable movers.
