Finding the Right Online Education Program for You

Kelly S
There are many people that want to go back to school, but just don't have the time or the resources to make this dream a reality. Online programs are a great option for those that are working full time or have children. How is someone supposed to sift through all of the programs available to find a legitimate program that is right for them? The following will help anyone find the perfect fit for their educational needs from someone who has been there.

Step One: Make sure you will excel in an online environment

Not all people succeed or learn as well as others when they are having to self teach material. Instructors are there to help you and will email back with any questions you ask, but most of your work is done on your own. This requires time and great self control in making sure your papers and assignments are turned in on time. Most programs are on a schedule just as any on campus programs and are not self paced. You can't procrastinate if you want to maintain good grades.

Step Two: Choose your major

Not all programs are geared or are practical to be taken online. The most common types of programs you can find are Liberal arts, Business, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice for undergrad degrees. MBA, Social Work, Administration, and Education are some of the main advanced degree programs you will find. Hands-on learning and lab majors like many science degrees will not be something you will find, or what to do, in an online environment. Don't pick a major just because it is listed as online because you will not excel or be happy in your classes or the jobs you will be qualified for when you graduate.

Step Three: Find a school

One of the main problems people have with online degree programs is trying to find one that is accredited and they know is a real school. My biggest suggestion is chose a school that you know someone that has been to or you have heard of the school before. Many big named schools are now offering their programs online. I went to University of Maryland University College. It is accredited and shares programs with the University of Maryland. Make sure you check for accreditations and make sure it is a real school before you send any personal information or money to avoid scams. My classes are just as hard and thought provoking as when I attended a leading on campus university a few years back. Some large universities offering programs are Villanova, Virginia Tech, Boston University, and University of Cincinnati. These are just breaking the ice on the type of schools available with more and more schools offering new programs every semester. You don't have to give up your dreams of going to a great school because of your location or work schedule. I can't stress enough the importance of finding a reputable program.

Step Five: Apply for Admission

Online programs require the same standards as regular colleges if they are legitimate. They will require an application, proof of high school graduation, transcripts from high school and any colleges attended, and sometimes an essay. They will send a letter of acceptance or rejection just as any other school. If accepted they will send you information about registration and other school affairs.

Step Four: Paying for it all

Online education can be just as costly tuition wise as any other university program. Financial aid from the government and private lending companies are available. Fill out a FASFA form and see what aid that you can get. If a school does not offer a FASFA number then they are not accredited and do not send them money. Any school that you attend should take any federal financial aid such as Stafford loans, Perkins loans, and Pell grants.

Hopefully this information will help you gain an extra boost in your professional life and self confidence. Everyone that has a dream of higher education should have access no matter what their situation. Good luck in your pursuit!
