Finding the Right Pet for You

Shannon Frye
Before picking out the exact pet that you want, you will need to ask yourself a series of questions. What type of pet can you afford? Dogs require a lot of exercise are you physically cabable of that? Do you want a new puppy that will keep you up at night?

You need to figure out which pet would work out best for you. If you aren't as active as you used to be perhaps an older dog will work out best. The dog will be more laid back and wont be as playful as a new puppy would be. Cats don't require any exericse to keep them behaving well. Hamsters don't require you to walk them, you simply place a wheel in their cage for them to run on. Parrots require a lot of attention and they are quite expensive. Just the cage alone will cost you a lot of money. On the other hand, cats don't need a cage to sit in all day long. You need to figure out which pet you would match up with.

Many people will purchase a new puppy and then things will get hectic around the house. Something will happen and they wont have the time or money for the new puppy anymore. A few months go by and the puppy ends up in an animal shelter. You also need to make sure that you will be able to keep your pets with you. You don't want to be renting an apartment that allows cats and then get evicted only to find out that you can't find another place that will let you keep cats. The number one reason dogs and cats end up in shelters is because of landlords.

If you are a really active person and you have patience and time I would suggest buying a puppy. If you don't want to be that physically active I would suggest an older dog, a cat or a small animal such as a rabbit or chinchilla. If you have small children in the home I would suggest a cat but understand that kids can be hard on animals. Parrots are known to bite and they would not mix well with small children that love to put their fingers in animal cages. Hamsters are really good pets but they break out of their cages all of the time.

Don't pick out an animal before you know what you're getting yourself into. Make sure that you can afford the pet that you are getting.
