Finding the Right Tourist Destination Through the ‘More Fun in the Philippines’ Photos

Rianne Hill Soriano

The "More fun in the Philippines" phenomenon started as a 2012 tourism campaign by the Philippine government. In no time, it evolved into a meme that spread through Internet like wildfire.

The impact of its three campaign photos from the "It's more fun in the Philippines" official site has inspired the creation of hundreds of similar artworks and taglines by Filipinos across the nation. These photos that express their most creative ideas to promote Philippine tourism can now benefit tourists looking for ideal destinations to check out in the country.

Natural Attractions

With the countless of tropical paradise locations around the 7,107 islands that comprise the Philippine archipelago, it is not a surprise that many photos made for the campaign feature the beautiful beaches around the country. One of the popular beach photos that came out showcases the sunset at the Montemar Beach Club in Bataan with the words describing it "End of days. More fun in the Philippines."

The jaw-dropping Chocolate Hills in Bohol plays around the words "Kisses. More fun in the Philippines." This reflects its resemblance with the shape of the Hershey's Kisses chocolates and the fact that one of the province's staple products is called the peanut kisses.

The majestic beauty of Batanes' green rolling hills, which are mostly inhabited by cows, inspires a photo with the tagline "Farmville. More fun in the Philippines."

Traditions and Festivals

The Ati-atihan Festival in Aklan, the same province where the world-renowned beach paradise of Boracay is located, gets immortalized on photo with the words "Cosplay. More fun in the Philippines." The said festival, which attracts many local and international tourists every year, shows Filipino performers in native costumes.

The Philippine Christmas season, one of the most heavily visited times of the year as both Filipinos and foreigners travel to the country to celebrate the holidays, hosts the lighting of traditional lanterns that resemble stars at homes, offices, schools, and business establishments. One photo featuring these Christmas lanterns describes the tradition as "Stargazing. More fun in the Philippines."

The annual Moriones Festival in Marinduque features local folks in fascinating costumes and masks. The elements seen on what those participating in the festival wear have similarities with Ancient Greek and Roman costumes, which lead to the photo caption "300. More fun in the Philippines."

Exotic Creatures

People's interest in seeing exotic creatures around the Philippines is shown in photos highlighting some of the country's exotic creatures. Bohol's tarsier, a small furry animal with very large, rounded eyes, has a facial shape similar to that of Yoda from "Star Wars." Its distinct characteristics aptly suit the photo's caption "Yoda. More fun in the Philippines."

Found only in the Philippines, the rufous-headed tailorbird, which mainly live in Mt. Apo, the Philippines' highest mountain, is featured in a photo that plays with the words "Tweeting. More fun in the Philippines."

Diving enthusiasts can find a number of world-class diving spots around the country where they can see the popularized clownfish from the Pixar movie "Finding Nemo." One photo with this sea creature aptly describes itself as "Finding Nemo. More fun in the Philippines."
