Finding Safety on the Roads: U.S. Drivers in Canada

While many of us hope to travel abroad few know what to look for on their journey there. The roads in foreign countries can be much different than what you know. And safety should be your first priority. Learning what the rules of the road are and safety tips of where you are going should be a important step in your travel itinerary.

Below are several tips to remember and why you should note them:

Tip 1: Determine which side of the road is legal in the country you are traveling to: In the US we drive on the Right hand side, however if you are traveling to Canada it will be necessary to note that the legal side there is the right hand side although in some areas driving on the left side is legal.

This can cause many problems in your ability to feel comfortable and function as a safe driver. Drive slow and allow yourself time to adjust to your new position on the road.

Tip 2: Make sure that your license will be enough to drive on the roads you are traveling to: Just because you are licensed in the US doesn't mean you are licensed in Canada. Obtaining a international license will allow you more additional privileges like renting a car, etc..

Tip 3: Know the measurement systems that are used in the country you are traveling to: In the US we use miles however in Canada they use Kilometers. This will affect the speed limit signs and laws.

For instance if you were going 60 mph that would be an equivalent of 100km/h. Learning the signs and what they mean can prevent you from receiving a ticket or getting into an accident.

Tip 4: Learn the hazards of the roads your traveling on: In Canada there are several places where signs like pedestrian crossings & Wildlife passing warnings are important. Canada has many large animals and this can be hazardous to the average driver. Hitting a deer, elk, or moose can cause major damage to your vehicle or you!

Tip 5: Learn a bit of the language spoken: Many places in Canada have signs that are in French only. If you don't understand or speak the language this can be dangerous to yourself and other motorists.

Remembering that you should at least know basic words will keep you in the loop on valuable warning signs and road conditions.
