Finding a Single Passenger Cruise Ship

The Cruise Industry is Now Courting the Single Passenger, Again

Mike Burnside
The cruise industry has for decades always charged the single passenger more. Passenger cruise ships that have cabins built for two, but only have a single passenger occupying it charged that passenger a surcharge sometimes up to 200 percent of the per-person fare. However, cruise lines now understand that they are missing a huge audience in the single cruise passenger. Solo accommodations on many cruise ships are now beginning to show up more frequently. Here is a list of new ships that range from small luxury boats all the way up to the megaships cruising the seas.

Single Cruising on the Norwegian Epic
The Norwegian Epic is a megaship with a passenger size of 4,200, offering the single cruiser a new cabin category called Studios. These Studios will be designed and priced for the single cruiser. The Epic will have 128 of these Studio cabins with their own lounge area. Each Studio cabin will be 100 square feet with a full sized bed and a separate area for bathroom, sink, and shower. The Studio lounge area is a common place for the single passengers to meet separately from the rest of the passengers.

Single Cruising on the Azura
The Azura is another megaship with a 3,080-passenger capacity and is part of the P&O Cruise line offers 18 outside and inside single staterooms. Each stateroom is 130 square feet with an oversized single bed, bathroom with shower and toilet.

Single Cruising on the American Independence
The Independence is a part of the American Cruise Lines that operate primarily on the East Coast of the United States. This smaller ship with a passenger size of 104 offers seven dedicated cabins for the single passenger. Some of the cabins have private balconies and a few are inside staterooms.

Some popular cruise lines that are either giving specials to single passengers or waiving the surcharge are:

Single Cruising on MSC Cruises
The MSC cruise line is giving promotional discounts on some cruises for the single passenger. The MSC cruise line will either reduce the surcharge or waive it all together depending on the destination.

Single Cruising on Costa Cruises
The Costa Cruise line has currently eight ships that have single occupancy cabins available. The exact number of cabins and on which ship will vary.

Single Cruising on Holland America Cruises
One ship in the Holland America Cruise line, the Prinsendam has three single cabins, two outside, and one inside. Holland is the only megaship cruise line that still offers a share program for single passengers where same sex and smoking preferences are matched.

I haven't been on a cruise for the exact reason they charge double for going alone. I am going to look into these. Thanks!
