Finding a Spiritual Side In Yourself

Jacob Malewitz
God is a big word to use in a coffee shop full of strangers, college students, former college students, and professors. Perhaps the stranger a college student but a professor and a non-believer on the side. This essay will explore how to find a spriritual side, never making it too serious, and never making it too funny.

We work all our lives towards money. Some work all their lives towards a spiritual side. The priest prays because he has to; that makes him what he is. But it is different for the person who is less spiritual. We find ourselves sipping on lattes in a coffee shop, and we can't come up with an argument on why God, or having a spiritual side, is important.

We can make all the money and the world and not have a single drop of happiness. Perhaps men or woman fly to us when we want love; but the heart needs something other than love. By finding a time to do anything spiritual-from meditating to actually getting on our knees-we explore the unconscious. Many want to believe in God, even if they are addicted to lattes. They find something missing in their lives that the money or sex cannot fill.

There are many ways to find a spiritual side. We can explore ourselves on the page; perhaps write a letter to God; or talk to someone like a priest. By acting on our wishes we find different things within ourselves. That is key to finding spirituality: We find things in us, past the pain, and we act. When we act we are not thinking of moving into a condo that is a few thousand less than our house. We do not dream of arguing with all the college students, professors, or college students who are professors on the side. The coffee shop could be a false thought; what if all the people there not only believed in a higher force but prayed to him (or her) on every occasion they had?

We do not find a spiritual side by indulging in hate, drugs, or sex. These are the vices that should not be indulged in. The higher force would not hate, would not destroy their mind with drugs, and certainly would not sleep with every attractive person we see.

In working on our spiritual side we may discover the good and bad within us. We find the simplest things can make us happy. We meditate. We pray. The higher force begins acting by the way we act. If we want a discount on a cup of coffee we do not scream things, but say we are a loyal customer who only has some spare change (being spiritual can mean being cheap). In all honesty, the joking could lead us towards a different sort of spirituality: Would God really want us to take him so seriously?
