Every youth is looking for something to do over the summer. Summer is a great time to get your child their first job. Check with your child's school to find out the information needed for working papers. They will also be able to tell you the set work restrictions based on your child's age. Here are some suggestions to help your minor find a summer job.

Fill Out Local Business Applications:

Drive your youth around to various businesses and have them fill out applications. Consider business' that thrive in the summer such as landscaping, flower shops, and farms as well as the pizza shops. Check out the safety of the establishment and the social environment. If you feel any hesitations or concerns simply remove that option from your youth's choices and do not return with the completed application.

Call the Mayor's Office:

Call your mayor's office and ask if they have any jobs set aside for the youth. Often times they have a certain number of jobs that they have slotted for youth that they have funded with grant funds. If you live in a city this is definitely an option as the city is often concerned about the crime and gang rates increasing as the summer heats up and the youth take to the streets with nothing to do.

Check with a few Local Non Profit Organizations:

Check with a few local non profit organizations. They may have slots that need to be filled for the summer. There are many summer programs for children and feeding programs that have extra needs in the summer months. Don't let the words Non Profit cause you think no pay. Non Profit organizations often have volunteer as well as paid positions available.

Help Your Youth Establish His Own Business Ideas

Some typical youth business ideas include landscaping. Your youth could pass out fliers door to door recruiting verbal contracts to do weekly or bi-weekly yard work including: lawn mowing, raking, and planting flowers. Another common business idea would be a paper route. Check with your local newspapers to see if they have positions available. Allow your youth to be creative. Perhaps they are great at computer technology. If so help them locate individuals that need assistance in that area by putting an ad in the local paper or on an online source.

As a parent you can help your youth become a great achiever by helping them get their first employee positions. Many parents leave it to the youth to find the job and then scold them all summer when they see that they did not find one yet. Your help and aide can go a long way in helping them and it also can help you develop a closer relationship.
