Finding Time to Exercise When You're a Stay-At-Home Mom

Niki
As a stay-at-home mom, I know how difficult it can be to find time to work out between all the feeding, changing, playing and cleaning up after the kids. But if you find time to exercise on a regular basis, you will feel like a new person. You will have more energy, look and feel better and be healthier. Here are a few ways for stay-at-home moms to find time to work out on a regular basis:

1. Get up early. Set your alarm for an hour or so before your children wake up. Even if this means waking up at 5:00 AM to do a 45 minutes work out video. Or if your husband is still home go for a walk or jog around your neighborhood before he has to leave for work. This may be difficult to do at first but you will have so much more energy through out your day it will be worth it!

2. Go for a long walk with your children: Walking is an excellent work out if you keep up a nice pace. Put your toddler is a stroller and/or put your baby in a sling and go walking! Try for at least 30 minutes a day. If the weather is bad, go to your local mall and walk there.

3. Include your children: I know this can be harder than sounds but there are plenty of exercise videos available that includes you child or baby in the workout. Check out Mambo Moms: Fitness for Baby & Mom, Mommy Baby Body Builders, or Billy Blanks Tae Bo Kicks DVD (available on Amazon). Exercising with your older children is not only a great way to fit a work out in, but your child with also be benefiting from regular workouts with you. Hopefully this is a habit your child will keep up as he/she grows older.

4. Join a class: Finding a local gym with free childcare is an excellent way for moms to fit a workout in. If this isn't an option for you because of cost, check your local church. Many larger churches offer very inexpensive classes with childcare.

I hope I gave you a few ideas that will work for you and your family. It takes time, energy and lots of dedication to get into a regular exercise routine, but it is so worth it! A happier, healthier mom makes a better mom!

Including the kids is really important, and I'm actually in better shape than I was before kids b/c of all the carting around I do!

These are all really great tips! I especially like #3. Children need exercise too!

Great advice. I run with a running club one night a week and my husband handles dinner and the girls. Then he and I take turns running the rest of the week. We BOTH work hard and deserve this time to take care of ourselves!

Great advice! One of the misconceptions I had about being a sahm was that I would have tons of time to exercise. I imagined working out while my kids either napped or played happily. Then my first son was born and reality hit! LOL
