Now what?
You see, it's not enough to know what your purpose is...you have to do something about it. Taking action can be scary, though, if you aren't prepared and you don't know what to do next. So today I'll talk about what to do once you've discovered your true purpose and figured out what it is that you're meant to do.
First, examine your existing business, if you have one.
Once you've established your real purpose in business, it's time to examine your existing business, assuming that you have one. Is your existing business set up for you to be on the path of your true purpose? For example, when I discovered that my purpose was to be a teacher and a writer, and that I was meant to teach people about better ways of growing a small business, I realized that my own small business needed some adjustments so that I could teach more and get more involved with my readers. So take a hard look at your own business and determine if some changes are needed.
Second, consider starting a second business.
I have several clients who have full-time careers or own businesses, but who came to me for help because they weren't fully satisfied with something that just paid the bills. They realized their businesses or their jobs weren't quite meeting their true purposes, so they decided to start businesses that would help them fulfill what they were meant to do. You don't have to throw out your entire life just to start living your life purpose- nor should you, if what you're currently doing pays the bills.
Third, don't go crazy.
Remember that any new business takes time to grow into profitability, despite what some internet marketing gurus would have you believe. So instead of quitting your job or closing up your business to make way for something new that fits your true business purpose better, start the new thing in your spare time and do what it takes to grow it into positive cashflow before you change the rest of your life.
Fourth, relax.
One of the best things about ascertaining your true purpose in business is that things really start to flow when you discover that purpose. Ideas come easier, things fall into place faster, and everything just works better. None of the steps I've covered today should be particularly difficult, once you're on the right path. That said, I would be remiss if I didn't include the next step:
Fifth, don't be afraid to ask for help.
Sometimes it's not immediately apparent how your true purpose in business actually translates to a real business. A good business consultant or coach can help you work out the business model, show you how to create revenue streams, and assist you with the startup logistics. Don't be afraid to ask for help - it might be the smartest decision you ever make!
Finding your true purpose in business is a great first step, but the hard part comes when it's time to really do something about it. Follow these steps and you'll be on the right path toward doing what you were always meant to do.
