With the economy continuing its slump, more and more non-profit organizations are in need of volunteers to step up and lend a helping hand. Not all donations have to be a monetary gift, sometimes donating your time is just as valuable and helpful to a non-profit. There are opportunities all around the North Texas area in Dallas and the surrounding cities. One of the best ways to get started is to plug in to a website that lists opportunities and will notify members when there is a need for volunteers.
Volunteer North Texas
Volunteer North Texas is a non-profit organization that makes almost 80,000 volunteer referrals per year. The service they provide is that they connect willing volunteers with the non-profit charities and other organizations in North Texas that have need of volunteers. Their mission statement says, "Transforming communities and strengthening nonprofits through volunteerism." Many times there are people who are willing to donate their time, but don't know where to find the information. This service will get you plugged in and out there volunteering. They work will all kinds of North Texas non-profit charities including animal cruelty groups and violence prevention.
Idealist.org
Another great organization that can help you get out and volunteering is Idealist.org. This website will alert members to opportunities for volunteering according to parameters set by the member. Idealist will notify you of volunteer opportunities in your area, nationally, or worldwide if you prefer. Most of the opportunities are for volunteers only, but there are paid volunteer positions listed from time to time. Just to give an idea of what they stand for, their mission statement is, "Idealist connects people, organizations, and resources to help build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives." I have connected with several organizations over the years through Idealist.
Make a Difference Day - McKinney, Texas
Just north of the Dallas area is the city of McKinney, Texas. On October 21, 2011, the Volunteer McKinney Center is sponsoring the McKinney, Texas Make A Difference Day. The event consists of hundreds of volunteers completing different projects across the city of McKinney. There will be opportunities to help nurses with patients in a retirement home, packing gift bags for MADD, and many other opportunities on October 21st. Their mission statement says the organization wants to, "Enhance the spirit of citizen's responsibility and service in McKinney by facilitating volunteerism."
Registering for the above sites is a great step in the right direction to giving back to your communities and making your world a better place.
