My daughter joined our family when I was in one of the busiest positions of my career. I supervised 22 employees, spent at least nine hours a day at work, and then brought work home. I thought I would find that mysterious balance once I returned to work from my leave. But the assignments, challenges and demands I had left were still there when I returned. Motherhood was great, but where was that mysterious balance? It was nowhere to be found. It was then I realized I had to make a change.
I began to assess my skills and research other positions within my company. I found an ideal position that could utilize all of my experience and skills, but with a more predictable and relaxed pace. I began to find more of a balance. I could leave on time and I didn't have to take work home. I felt less stress and that resulted in a lighter, happier spirit for me. But a new position, alone, was not the complete answer. I still had to set boundaries and make choices about how I would spend my time. My priorities had changed and my actions needed to reflect that change.
Motherhood is a gift. Children are a blessing. Parenting is a responsibility. It's one that I took seriously, so my actions began to change. I cut back on my travel or brought my family along when I could. I said no to extra committees and optional assignments. I stopped coming in extra early and staying late. Yet I still felt as if that wasn't enough.
What is the right balance? Should it be 50/50? Is that really enough parenting time? If it's 60/40 home to work, are you being a good employee? Motherhood requires you to choose who gets the most and best of you. So perhaps balancing isn't the real issue. Perhaps it's an issue of choice.
