Fine Sights to See While Standing on a Corner in Winslow, Arizona

Timothy Sexton

If you're a standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona you should actually be standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. Such a fine sight to see, indeed. The Corner in Winslow, Arizona was made famous by the Eagles in their song "Take It Easy" but that fame has translated into one of the most famous corners in any city in the world. So what fine sights can you expect to see at the famous Winslow, Arizona Corner Park?

Forget the flatbed Ford slowing down to look at you and instead train those peepers on the trompe l'oeil mural painted a wall that features, yes indeedy, a girl in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at you. This being America, the girl is blonde. The subject of the mural is the lyrics that made Winslow famous, written by Glen Frey and Jackson Browne. The artist is John Pugh. The Winslow, Arizona mural inspired by the hit song by the Eagles could be found emblazoned across a building in Standin' on a Corner Park. In October of 2004, a fire destroyed much of the building that was home to the mural, but fortunately the wall and the painting were saved.

The whole point of a visit to Winslow, Arizona aside from standin' on a corner and waiting for that chick in the Ford to slow down and give you the eye is to take it easy. The problem is that when it comes to visiting the tourist attractions around Winslow, it is hard to take the Eagles at their word. You can't just take it easy when so many tourist attractions are in the vicinity. The key word here is vicinity. Once you make it past the Standin' on a Corner Park deepinthehearta Winslow, that's about it. Outside the environs of the city itself, however, well, that's a whole 'nother song.

Meteor Crater is only about thirty miles away from that famous corner in Winslow, Arizona. And such a fine site to see it really is. Scientists used all their Really Big Sciency Brains to figure out that the huge crater outside Winslow, Arizona was the result of a meteor impact roughly 50,000 years ago. And you thought a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowing down to look at you was a fine sight to see! Meteor Crater is a thing of history and beauty and beautiful historic tourist bucks. The big hole in the ground was "discovered" in 1871. What that means, of course, is that it took until 1871 for a white guy to find this big hole in the ground. Natives probably knew about Meteor Crater for millennia.

Once you get back to that corner in Winslow, Arizona you can pretty much walk to the city's other major tourist attraction. Unlike the history books view of Meteor Crater, the Old Trails Museum in Winslow doesn't pull any ethnocentric punches: here is a museum that considers Stone Age indigenous peoples just as important as to the Winslow area as...well...Glen Frey or Jackson Browne. Permanent exhibits on display at this nifty little peek into the past cover such vital elements to the history of the Arizona community as the rise and fall of Route 66, the Harvey Girls and America's Nazi sympathizer/airport designer, Charles Lindbergh.

Although I'd have to hold my nose while visiting a state which supports racial profiling laws, I would like to see the Meteor Crater...an incredible in person sight I am sure.
