Fingerfish: Looks like a Saltwater Fish

Shannon Frye
A lot of people do not know what brackish means. This means that the fish is not capable of living in a freshwater or saltwater fish tank. You will need to place the fish into a tank which is just like a freshwater tank but contains a very small amount of salt in the water. You wont have to add as much salt as your average saltwater fish tank. If you are looking for fish that you can place in a brackish tank you will need to find the specific fish and there are only several different kinds of fish that require a brackish freshwater tank. The Fingerfish is one type of fish which can go into a brackish tank.

If you want to keep this fish you will need to keep your temperature somewhere around 70 and 80 degrees. You will need to place a heater in the tank to make sure that the water doesn't drop below this level. You will also need to hook up your light to a timer so that the tank doesn't become over heated. This will cause your Fingerfish to become stressed out and it will get sick or even possibly die. Leaving the light on for too long will also develop a bad algae problem that is hard to control and get rid of as well.

This fish will get very large. When you purchase this fish it will be very small around a couple of inches. This fish will always reach over 10 inches in length so you need to make sure that you have a big enough tank to house this fish. If you don't think you can afford to purchase a 90 gallon fish tank than you will want to avoid purchasing this fish because you're tank will be too small for the fish to swim around and roam for food. In a small tank the fish will not be able to look for food or even turn around.

If you want to purchase this fish you can purchase it from a local Petsmart for around $15, like the majority of other brackish fish. Brackish fish are very hard to find because a lot of the pet stores do not place them in a brackish tank. People will purchase these fish thinking that they are saltwater or freshwater fish and then they will die and the owner will have no idea why it happened. You will want to purchase a fish only if it's in a brackish tank or the fish is probably already stressed out and on it's way to having some type of health problems.
