Fingernail Changes During Pregnancy

Jody Morse
Pregnancy causes a number of changes to occur within a woman's body. Women are also often affected by some of these changes differently. For example, many women notice that their acne clears up, while others find that theirs worsens. Some women also begin to notice fingernail changes during pregnancy. Is this common? How does pregnancy affect fingernails?

Nails Changes During Pregnancy

Most women find that their fingernails grow faster during pregnancy. This is due to the increased levels of estrogens that occur with the hormonal changes that take place after a woman conceives. Higher levels of estrogen are known to help both the hair and nails grow. On the other hand, there are many women who also do not even notice that their fingernails change during pregnancy.

It is common for women to experience other fingernail changes while they are pregnant. Some women find that their nails become stronger and break less easily. On the other hand, there are some women who find that their nails become more brittle and weaker during pregnancy.

Prenatal vitamins are also thought to contribute to nail changes during pregnancy. Nails are an indicator of overall health. Taking prenatal vitamins during pregnancy will help ensure that your body has been given all of the vitamins that it needs to carry a baby. Many women also adjust their diets during pregnancy to ensure that they are getting the right amount of nutrients.

Nail Changes After Pregnancy

It is not at all uncommon for women to find that their fingernails do not return to their pre-pregnancy state right away. Many women continue to experience the nail changes that occur during pregnancy for three to six months later. Not only does it take some time for your hormones to return to their natural state, but months of eating healthy and taking prenatal vitamins can help ensure that nails remain healthy for months after you have given birth.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that fingernail changes during pregnancy are very common. If you begin to notice that your nails suddenly start growing faster than usual or if they change in terms of strength, this is perfectly normal. There is nothing to worry about. That said, if you are concerned about the changes which are affecting your nails during pregnancy, the best thing that you can do is talk to your health care provider.
