Fire David Letterman Rally Set for Tuesday

Robert Dougherty
'Fire David Letterman' is not a demand that many expected to be heard about David Letterman until this week. But Fire David Letterman rallies are starting to pop up in New York, as protestors hope to get David Letterman fired with their rally on Tuesday. CBS would hardly be expected to fire David Letterman, since he just became king of late night ratings this week. But that may have been due to David Letterman's controversial jokes about the Palin family, which sparked the desire to fire David Letterman in the first place.

The calls to fire David Letterman will be heard long and loud at a "Fire David Letterman" rally Tuesday outside Ed Sullivan Theater. At 4:30, an hour before Letterman's daily taping, protesters will march against Letterman, in a continued backlash against his Sarah Palin jokes.

The mess started when David Letterman joked that Sarah Palin's daughter got "knocked up by A-Rod" during his top 10 list of things that happened during Sarah Palin's recent trip to New York. The firestorm got worse when Palin attacked Letterman for the joke, and accused him of making the joke about her 14-year-old daughter Willow getting raped.

Letterman claimed he made the joke about Bristol Palin and her pregnancy, but Palin attended a Yankees game last week with Willow instead. Sarah Palin's continued comments against Letterman have spawned calls to fire David Letterman, from citizens and even a few lawmakers.

New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb recently wrote to CBS CEO Les Moonves in hopes that he would fire David Letterman. Kolb wrote that firing Letterman would send a message that CBS would not stand for "demeaning and degrading comments about women."

If Kolb's letter doesn't get through to Moonves, the Fire David Letterman rallies will try to seal the deal. Tuesday's rally is being led by Michael Patrick Leahy, an RNC delegate from Middle Tennessee who usually protests taxes, and helped organized the famed "tea parties" from a few months back.

The calls to Fire David Letterman are unlikely to be heard to the point that Letterman would get fired, considering he just signed a new deal that keeps him on CBS until 2012. Letterman's continued buzz for his jokes, and his interviews, have helped him vault over the ever-changing NBC late night lineup for the time being.

However, the arguments to fire David Letterman, and Sarah Palin's own continued efforts, will ensure that the controversy goes well into a second week, at least. Beyond that, it isn't clear where Letterman, Palin, and their supporters and detractors will go from there.

The only reason Letterman's ratings are high at this time is because of Sarah Palin. He should be thanking her! I watched the first part of his show the last couple of nights, because of Sarah, not him. He's a dud!

Is A-Rod some sort of pedaphile? Why did Letterman use him in the "joke"?

Wish I had known in time to be in NY to support Dave. Or may instead I would arrange protests against SNL, Jay Leno, and all the others who have made jokes about SP and her family. Strange how she ignored them and even honored some by appearing on SNL.

She's an embarrassment to her party. This will hurt her more than help her before it's over.

The gentleman from Tennessee would have better served his party to leave this alone. Even though Letterman appears quite liberal, a lot of less liberal folks like him and watch his show. The biggest flaw is that Palin never confronted anyone else for their jokes, thus she's the joke.

All who shamelessly pays to much attention to Dave Letterman need to get a life. Go to church or something. You won't hear your pastor talk the way Dave talks. LOSERS!!!!

  • Nora 6/15/2009

How do you feel about other vulgar comedians? Dave is tame compared to the likes of Jon Stewart (sorry Jon Im a big fan of yours!)

  • Cowgirl from the west 6/15/2009

David Letterman is no gentleman. Twenty years ago he would have been taken off the air immediately. He has to go.

  • Barb Lane 6/15/2009

David Letterman needs to be fired immediately. He hasn't been funny for years.
