Fire Safe Cigarettes: Are They Safe for Humans

Mary Kirkland
Fire safe or self extinguishing cigarettes have passed in many states, while legislation is trying to stop house fires caused by burning cigarettes we have to ask ourselves if they are safe for smokers.

Why are they called fire safe?

Because there were so many house, trailer and other fires caused by burning cigarettes left unattended or dropped by people who fell asleep, legislation was passed to make it mandatory in many states that all cigarettes be fire safe or self extinguishing.

These new fire safe cigarettes will now stop burning if left unattended for more than a minute or if dropped.

Many cities like my own here in Las Vegas, enacted bans on smoking in certain public places like bars, hospitals, government buildings and other establishments before this fire safe cigarette legislation was passed.

Are Fire Safe cigarettes safe?

Since these fire safe cigarettes have been on the market there have been a whole slew of complaints coming from smokers. According to Care2 Petition Site "The need to keep a FSC cigarette burning increases the number of inhales per cigarette, and thus increases the amount of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide intake into the smokers lungs. The result is more health-risk damage to the smoker."

Some smokers have to keep re-lighting these fire safe cigarettes in order to keep them lit and as I have seen first hand, can lead to fires accidentally being lit when the cigarette is relit and the hot ash drops to the ground. This hot ash has burned more than one hole in my carpet when people have relit their cigarettes.

The potential for this hot ash to start a fire is very real, so I wonder how the makers of these cigarettes can call them fire safe.

The fact that smokers have to inhale more with these cigarettes to keep them lit, than they would have had to with the old cigarettes obviously is going to have serious effects on the smokers also. The more they have to inhale the more tar and nicotine they get into their bodies.

While I am not a smoker and never have been, several members of my family are. Now that cigarettes have changed and we don't know exactly what was done to them to make them fire safe, I worry about the health of my family and everyone else that smokes these new fire safe cigarettes.
