Fire Safety Tips for Your Home

According to FEMA every year, more than 4,000 Americans die and more than 25,000 are injured in fires, many of which could be prevented. No one ever think they will lose their home or life by a fire, but it happens too often.

Here are some tips that can help prepare and even save your life in the event of a fire.

Your family should practice a home fire drill at least four times a year. These fire drills should be practiced during the day as well as during the night. You can even time the family to see how long it takes to exit the home and work toward improving it

Make sure you have more than one operating smoke alarm, check the smoke alarms often and change the batteries regularly. It is also a great idea to own at least two fire extinguishers. It is also important to test your fire extinguisher.

Teach and practice with your family how to crawl to get under the fire. Stress the importance of staying low where the air is the cleanest.

It is important to do a walk through of your home. This walk through should include everyone that lives in the home. Make sure the doors and windows open easily and they are easy to access. If there are bedrooms on an upper level you want to make sure you purchase a portable fire escape ladder. These ladders can be stored in front of a bedroom window, under the bed etc.

Make sure you have more than one way out of the house. You want to make sure you discuss all possible exits. This is very important and can save lives.

Remind your love ones to carefully feel doors and do not open a door that is warm, look for another way to escape. It is also important to tell your family members to close the door behind them this will slow the fire down just make sure everyone who is using that exit has done so before closing the door.

Your family will probably not use the same escape route so it is important to discuss a place to meet that is away from the home once everyone has exited.

Stay calm and do not panic and stress to your family members once they get out of the burning house never go back in.
