Fireflies

Deborah Coss
She sat with friends on a grassy knoll,
The girl from the city,
With two country boys.
The sun was setting,
On another warm sultry day.
They had all worked hard,
And no one had much to say.
In the middle, she sat and stared out,
When all of a sudden,
Something curious was happening…
What was this all about.
Was she losing her mind,
A flashback from all those days
Of orange Sandoz and vitamin c?
Yikes what did this mean,
Were her eyes playing tricks?
Panicking but still wanting to look cool,
She said nothing, but broke out in a sweat!
There in the distance was a warm fuzzy glow,
That first dodged to the right,
And then to the left,
Then up, then down,
Man, this all intensified her sweat!
Maybe she had flipped and was seeing things.
Well, now it's funny and she remembers with a grin,
The first day she saw fireflies,
And it was the city slicker,
Who was the true bumpkin!
