Fireflies on July 4

"The Fireflies' Glow "

Cindy Lynn

This July 4 poem was written with the memory of fireflies in mind. Unfortunately, there are no fireflies where I currently live, but that doesn't stop me from seeing them in my mind's eye ... their soft light sparkling the July 4 sky.

The Fireflies' Glow

Across a velvet sky
Fireflies flutter and glow,
their light warming
my heart to its center.

They float from bush
to tree, free to come
and go as they please,
illuminating my soul.

Their whimsical movements
whisper a reminder to be grateful
for the country in which I live,
for the freedoms I enjoy.

Then, fireworks flare in that
dark July 4th sky and
I "ooo" and "aaah"
along with the crowd.

But later, when all is quiet,
it's not the rockets' red glare
that I remember, but the
message of the fireflies' glow.
