Fireplace Decorating Ideas for the Mantel and Beyond

When a fireplace is in use, it is a thing of beauty. When it's not in use.....it can be an eyesore. Here we will discuss a few fireplace decorating ideas that will add beauty to the room, and help transform your fireplace into the focal point of the room. It's important to make the fireplace blend with the rest of the room, and try not to make it "pop" with a loud color that doesn't flow with the decor you have in place.

There are many fireplace decorating ideas that will take your fireplace from drab to fab in just a few simple steps. Here are a few suggestions:

Fireplace decorating ideas - The mantel

The biggest mistake people make when decorating the fireplace mantel, is they overdo it. Keep it simple. You don't have to fill the entire fireplace mantel with "stuff". Use this space to display a few bold accessories, decorative vases, one large artificial floral arrangement, beautifully framed photographs, and so on. Keep a sense of balance by anchoring one larger piece in the middle and then a few smaller pieces on the side. (Insider's Tip - An odd number of items always looks better than even numbers)

Fireplace decorating ideas - Above the mantel

There are many fireplace decorating ideas for above the mantel, as well. This is the perfect place to display a large decorative mirror, two or three small coordinating photos, a homemade wreath or floral swag, or even a professional family photo. If you have something "heavy" above the mantel, remember to keep it very simple atop the mantel. (Insider's tip - If you are renting, and cannot physically attach anything to the wall, simply prop any of these items against the wall and allow them to rest on the top of the mantel. This will peak visual interest and give your mantel a sophisticated and interesting look)

Fireplace decorating ideas - The hearth

The hearth of the fireplace is the actual 'hole' in the wall. When not in use, this area can be decorated with candles, seasonal flowers, pumpkins, poinsettias, and so on. These methods are also useful in decorating a non-working fireplace, which would otherwise be an eyesore.

Fireplace decorating ideas - Fireplace screen

A fireplace screen will protect the area and look beautiful in front of the fireplace. Decorative fireplace screens come in a variety of styles and materials, some of which include wrought iron fireplace screens, glass fireplace screens, mirrored fireplace screens, sculpted fireplace screens, hand painted fireplace screens, and much more.

Fireplace decorating ideas - Accessories

With accessories, you can set the mood of the entire room. Want a rustic look? Add stacks of wood in metal or copper carriers or wooden buckets. Want a country look? Place a large wicker basket filled with potpourri or dried flowers. Want a modern look? Place one tall decorative vase beside the fireplace with one tall artificial flower. Want a traditional look? Place a functional fireplace tool set and tall matches beside the fireplace.

Fireplace decorating ideas - Seasonal and holiday decorating

If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, you are SET for seasonal decorating. A fireplace is a perfect place to display seasonal decorations, such as Christmas stockings, 4th of July banners, Thanksgiving cornucopias, Birthday decorations and cards, spooky Halloween items, and so much more. Change your fireplace with each season and holiday, and add a fun element to any room.

Fireplace decorating ideas - Protection

Your fireplace can be a great place for the family to gather on a cold night and spend time together. Keep the family safe by always using a fireplace screen when in use, and keep a fire resistant rug on the carpet area in front of the fireplace.
