Fireproof - Kirk Cameron Stars in a Movie for Marriages

Can a Movie Help Lower the Marriage Failure Rate?

Sheryl Young
"Fireproof" - a new movie opening this Friday (Sept. 26) at theatres around the U.S. - promises to be the "Facing the Giants" of late 2008, with marriage as the subject this time. Sherwood Baptist Church, the same church that took on making "Giants", approaches the delicate issues of facing the challenges in today's marriages in the biggest way - taking on the Silver Screen.

Kirk Cameron (of TV's Growing Pains and the Left Behind movies) takes on the lead role as a fireman whose marriage is in trouble.

The making of "Fireproof" was totally driven by Sherwood volunteers except for one professional camera crew of 8 people. Beside playing some of the parts in the movie, church members were involved in all aspects from catering to set design.

Marriage as we know it traditionally has come under great "fire" today. Both outside and inside the church, the marriage failure rate is above 50%. People do not seem to have a sense of how marriage takes compromise and sacrifice, instead of just expecting the other person to make us "happy". We can hardly criticize those who want to legally re-define marriage as trying to "ruin traditional marriage" until we improve its success rate.

If you are thinking of marriage, in a dull or troubled marriage, want to teach your kids about marriage, or even if you are happily married, RUN - don't walk - to this movie. Your patronage is needed to keep movies coming which the whole family can see, and to show Hollywood once again that Americans DO enjoy movies without bloody violence, foul language, unbridled nudity and stupid, unnecessary sex scenes. Plus, your marriage may benefit from the film's message.

There are already 3 great reviews of "Fireproof" (to my knowledge) here at Associated Content, so there's no sense in re-inventing the wheel! I just wanted to spread the word to as many viewers, writers and info searchers who may stop by here as possible. Well said! I like the part about having a better leg to stand on when defining traditional marriage, once men and women couples are more successful at it! Divorce and adultry and domestic violence are all things that threaten the sanctity of traditional marriage just as much as same sex marriage. I don't know who said it but it's witty , cynical, and applies: "I'm all for gay marriage. Let them be miserable like the rest of us!"

Great movie!! My husband agreed to see it with me, but he doesn't attend church regular. I think this was a great way to get the message to him and all others in the same boat. Very refreshing to see good morals used in a film of today. Hope this isn't the last.

    Sheryl,
I will go an see the movie and as far as the bad comments from those who don't leave a place where you can write back, cowardess and fear that they are absolutely wrong! I suppose if people are used to blood, gore, sex, and violence, something that is pure and actually has a moral and ethical teaching about it could be boring to them. I can't imagine it is boring and I absolutely love Kirk Cameron! He's a God fearing young man and we don't have very much of those running about now do we. Great article and you're an inspiration to me Sheryl!
    Love Ya!
    Mary

To "Val" - who like other people who leave negative comments but won't let us see who he/she is or have a chance to respond, I stand by my preview. I also reviewed the movie after seeing it (see a newer article on my list) and totally disagree. But 1 bad comment out of 38 positives so far isn't bad.
