Fires Still Blazing in Florida and Georgia

Heavy Wind Looks to Make Things Difficult for Firefighters

Florida and Georgia fire fighters were hoping that a rain storm would bring some relief to their efforts to end a wildfire that has been blazing on the border of the two states. This hope was diminished when winds looked to increase on Monday, likely only fueling the blaze more.

The fire that these men have been bravely fighting started over a week ago and has made its way through swamps and woodlands. As of Monday, the fire had consumed over 336 square miles of land between Florida and Georgia.

Gusts of wind up to 25 miles per hour are expected to occur in the region of the fire on Monday. Though some rain did fall on Sunday, it did not do enough to keep the fire entirely in check.

By Monday morning, it has been said that about 30 percent of the original fire that was burning in Florida had been stopped. With the fire greatly diminished, putting out the rest of it should be at least a bit easier as airplanes can be used to assist fire fighters on the ground.

In total, about 150 miles of highway in Florida has been shut down due to the blaze, causing many problems with transportation. 150 homes have been evacuated since the fire began and most of the residents of these homes are still not being allowed to go back. The estimated loss from the fire so far is about $3.7 million. It has been said that over 130 buildings have been destroyed; half of these being homes.

The fire in Georgia is being aggressively attacked by fire fighters. The methods are working and the fire is starting to be contained. The fire burning in the southeast part of the state started on Saturday, May 5th when lighting struck and ignited the woods in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The fires from this location spread into Florida through the Okefenokee swampland.

It is hoped that these separate fires throughout Florida and Georgia can be contained as quickly as possible and no more homes will be destroyed.
