The number one rule that should always be followed is that children should not let off fireworks. This goes for the little ones and the big ones. Any other time of the year we would not allow our children a lighter, so don't give them one this time. An adult should light all fireworks, no exceptions. Children should stay back several feet as some fireworks will travel. Be especially careful with any of the fireworks that spin, shoot high flames, or shoot into the air.
Sparklers, tend to be popular among children. However, use extreme caution. Young children should not be allowed to have them period. If you want to let your children play with the sparklers, always make sure that there is close adult supervision. The children playing with them should stand away from one another, keeping the stick away from the hair, body, and clothing. Even after the sparkler has burnt out, it still remains hot. Have a container with water to put them in immediately after usage.
Do not hold any firework in your hand while lighting. Some fireworks are placed in something before being fired off. They should never be put into anything flammable or containers not meant for that particular use. Fireworks should be placed on a flat surface away from people, pets, and homes. Do not set fireworks off in a wooded or brush area. This could result in a fire. Always have a bucket of water or some dirt handy in case something does set ablaze. Give the firework time to cool off before picking up or attempting to dispose of. They may remain hot for a couple minutes afterwards. This will help to avoid any burns or fire. Make sure it has completely died out before going near it.
Fireworks from last years fourth of July celebration should not be used this year. It can be dangerous to try and light a firework that has already been used or has been just sitting around for a year. It may have become more flammable. Another quick tip, do not purchase or use illegal or homemade fireworks. This is plainly unsafe.
There is a safe alternative to setting off your own fireworks. Go to one of the displays and leave it to the professionals if you still have some safety concerns about fireworks. Not only are these shows magnificent but it's very unlikely that anyone will be hurt. Almost every town has some type of fourth of July celebration with fireworks and I guarantee you that these are bigger and better than any you will see at home. Stick to these general guidelines and have a safe fourth of July.
