First Aid for Animal Bites

Mrs.Rogers
If you have been bitten by an animal, there are some things to look out for. First thing would be to check for an infection, such as Rabies or Tetanus. These can appear after a bite from an infected animal. Tetanus can cause "locked jaw", or a difficulty in breathing, or speaking, and has pain associated with it, plus swollen areas. Rabies can be fatal if not treated properly, by getting required shots.

Some signs to watch for or symptoms might be:Bleeding Pain Swelling Redness and/or Bruising.

Some things that might happen are...

The doctor may have to have the animal that bit you checked out or confiscated. This is to check for possible rabies contamination.

If there is, you will be required to take a series of shots. And for cases of tetanus, you may need antibiotics which the doctor may administer to you as well. This will help prevent infections.

What should you do if...

  • Clean the area well. Use soap and water, several times a day.
  • Apply ice to any swollen areas, several times a day, until swelling subsides.
  • Elevate the area higher than your heart. Increases the blood flow to the area, which helps the area heal faster.
  • Use ibuprofen for the pain or acetaminophen.
  • Tetanus shot is required if it is possible for Tetanus.

Important to remember...

  • -If you have numbness or tingling of the area where you were bit, please seek professional medical help.
  • -If you see signs of infections, check with your doctor.
  • -Any trouble in moving or any pains, get help.
  • -If you have swollen lymph nodes, go to doctor.
