First Christmas Together Gift Ideas for Her

Make a Good First Christmas Together Impression

Michy Lynn
Buying a Christmas gift for your girlfriend when your relationship is new, and especially if it's your first Christmas as a couple, can be a daunting task. The two of you are likely just getting to know each other, and that is stressful enough trying to make a good impression, and now you have to buy her a Christmas gift too?

Don't worry, we can come up with some special, unique, and thoughtful but also inexpensive Christmas gift ideas for the special woman in your life, without making you look cheap.

First Christmas Gift Ideas For the Romantic Woman

Contrary to popular opinion, some women aren't into romance. If you are one of the fortunate men who have snagged yourself a romantic and sentimental woman, while sometimes this may be irritating, consider yourself lucky in the gift department.

Romantic and sentimental woman are suckers for anything homemade, or a gift you have put some of yourself into. Writing a love letter and framing it, giving her a special piece of poetry you wrote for her yourself, perhaps penned on fancy stationary and framed, are both great gift ideas for the romantic woman in your life without going broke.

If you and your romantic woman have had pictures taken together, whether professionally or just at a fun date or event, take the photo to a local photo store, have them crop it and snaz it up a bit, and then find a pretty frame and give the to her for your first Christmas together.

For a romantic or sentimental woman, you can't go wrong with any gift that shows you put some love, romance, and a bit of yourself into.

First Christmas Gift Ideas For the Practical Woman

If your girlfriend is more of the practical sort, you might want to get her something utilitarian. Okay, this doesn't mean to buy her a dust buster (unless she has asked for that, of course, then it's cool), but you might consider buying her an appliance she's had her eye on for some time.

I'm more of a practical sort of woman, and I was dating a guy many years ago, and we were about to share out first Christmas together. He went to my mother to ask her what I wanted. I'd had my eye on this fancy blender for months (I loved to cook!), but I couldn't bring myself to buy it. My mother told him to get it for me.

He was so worried I would be upset because it was a practical gift, but I have to say, that was my favorite gift that year! If you have a practical woman like me, consider the things she likes and buy her a practical gift.

Plus, you men may learn something here. Black & Decker doesn't just make power tools. No, no, they also make kitchen appliances. Seriously! So when you buy your girlfriend a hand mixer to bake with, when your buddies ask what you bought, you can honestly tell them, "Man, I got her a Black & Decker."

Imagine their envy when they think how cool your girlfriend is when they were shopping in the smell 'em and stink 'em department for girly perfume stuff for their girlfriends.

Some practical gift ideas include: matching towel sets for the bath, specialty small appliances that are not typical for the kitchen, other kitchen items such as knife sets or special utensils (stay away from dishes and the like, since she may want to match them to her colors or kitchen), or other items or gadgets that she may want but wouldn't buy for herself.

One word of warning about practical gifts: if you aren't sure if your girlfriend is a practical woman or a romantic woman (shame on you if you don't), don't take the chance and buy a practical gift. While you can usually get away with a romantic gift for a practical woman, you will be in the doghouse fast if you buy a practical gift for a romantic woman.

First Christmas Gift Ideas For the Hobby Loving Woman

If you can't make up your mind whether your girlfriend is a practical or romantic woman, you can usually play it safe for a first Christmas together by buying her something that relates to her favorite hobby. Not only will she enjoy and use the gift, but she'll be impressed that you paid enough attention to know what her favorite hobby is!

It's okay if you don't know anything (or care) about her hobby. If you know what the hobby is, you can simply go to the appropriate store and ask for help. Most sales clerks in retail stores around Christmastime can see a new boyfriend a mile away and are more than willing to help you find the right gift (and earn their commission too).

First Christmas Gift Ideas to Avoid at All Costs!

Remember, this is only your first Christmas together, so don't set yourself up here. Keep it simple but personal, and don't set yourself up to a point where you can't outdo yourself next year (assuming neither of you have kicked each other to the curb).

Stay away from jewelry for a first Christmas together.

Stay away from lingerie, underwear, pajamas and sex toys for a first Christmas together.

Avoid buying anything too expensive that might make her worry about the cost or value of her gift, or may make her feel pressure or obligation, as though she 'owes' you something. Women hate that!

If you take the time to put a little bit of thought into the gift you buy for your first Christmas with your girlfriend, chances are that will show, and she's going to love anything you get her. Remember, the first Christmas together may be intimidating when it comes to buying the perfect gift, but if you think about it, you and your girlfriend are still in the honeymoon phase of your relationship, and this is actually the easiest Christmas you'll likely share together. At this point in the relationship, with less than a year together, she's probably still feeling giddy in 'new' love, and she's probably going to love anything you get her (but keep in mind, if you marry her, twenty years from now, she'll use this cheesy gift she once loved against you in future arguments! Face it men, you just can't win!).

Best of luck searching for the perfect first Christmas gift for your girlfriend!

Wonderful tips! I especially like the hobby idea. Good ideas, Michy. I heard one other tip on Rachel Ray a few days ago: Men should never give a woman a tiny jewelry box that looks like "THE BOX" but holds earrings or some other small piece of jewelry. Imagine the dissapointment! You can never be sure if the other person is on the same page early in a relationship, I guess. Merry Christmas!

My fiance and I went way overboard for our first Christmas. We still go overboard. This year, however, we decided to do part of the Christmas shopping for each other together. So we took half of our Christmas budget for each other and let each other pick our own gifts. It helps us to ensure that we get things we REALLY want as well as that we will get things that we will actually use. Now if I could just figure out what to get him with the other half of his money. Not a new relationship, I've been married 24 years, but I'm still gonna use one or two of these ideas. Thanks!

You are right on with the don't buy a practical gift for a romantic woman but I would take it a step further and ban men from buying practical gifts altogether due to their intractable incapacity to fathom what the concept of practical means to a woman.
