Yesterday was the first day of school for Bradley County, Tennessee. On April 27, 2011, as the school year was winding down, the area was hit by 5 tornadoes. When the dust settled the destruction was everywhere. The tornadoes didn't care if they hit homes, cars or even schools. One school is particular, Blue Springs Elementary on Blue Springs Road, was completely destroyed.
It has been determined that the school is beyond repair and will not be used any longer. What does that mean to the kids who started school yesterday? They are attending two other schools in the area. The 235 kids who attended Blue Springs are now going to either Waterville Elementary or Black Fox Elementary. These are kids in kindergarten through grade 5. They kids have been through the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them and they survived. Now they have to attend new schools and make new friends.
Their daily lives are changed and it's not often easy for little ones to adjust. But the first day of school wasn't bad according to one student, Kate, and hopefully they are all so excited to be back in class that they will adjust to their new 'normal'.
Students at Michigan Avenue Elementary school will also have to adjust to a school that was heavily damaged. This school, however, is under re-construction. The tornado damaged the gym when the roof was torn off and that area of the school is off limits to the students.
The first day of school is always an adventure, some kids love it and others hate it. For the kids in Bradley County, Tennessee, life goes on after the tornadoes. School is a constant and perhaps being in school, learning, sharing, making new friends and seeing old one, is just what they need.
No one will ever forget the tornadoes and the lasting memories of that horrible day. When I look around I still see homes that were damaged that have not been repaired. I still see many roofs with the now very familiar blue tarps. I know that people are still looking for new homes, new places to live. People are just trying to make it in life, day by day.
The first day of school is over. The children of Bradley County, Tennessee are survivors.
