First Look at the BlackBerry Torch

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is BlackBerry's answer to the growing popularity of other smartphones such as the iPhone and those running the Android operating system. BlackBerrys have been used for years by business professionals, the BlackBerry Torch keep the features that many users have grown to love about BlackBerry, while adding some new features to help it compete with other smartphones.

Universal Search

The BlackBerry Torch has a universal search functionality, allowing users to search the entire contents of the phone including email, folders, and applications in order to find something. The iPhone has a similar feature.

BlackBerry Messenger

The BlackBerry Torch has a new chat-style layout for text messages. Much like other smartphones, entire conversations are laid out in front of you as opposed to just a single message.

WiFi

The BlackBerry Torch has the ability to connect to the internet through both 3G networks and Wi-Fi. While the internet surfing capabilities of the Torch are no different than other smartphones on the market, the Torch also offers the ability to sync your music library over Wi-Fi without having to connect your phone to your computer. The Wi-Fi music syncing can definitely come in handle for music hound who don't want the hassle of connecting their phone each time they find a new jam.

Facebook and Twitter

Much like its predecessors the BlackBerry Torch has built-in support for social networking applications such as Twitter and Facebook. Unlike other versions of BlackBerry where Facebook and Twitter were added after the fact, the Torch offers integrated support for both services in its new BlackBerry 6 operating system.

Memory

The BlackBerry Torch only has 4GB of built-in memory, but it also support microSD card expansion, a feature missing from many of its competitors. With microSD expansion users can potentially store more music, photos, and applications than possible on other smartphones, simply because they can swap memory out on a whim.
