First Person: Where Were You when You Heard Osama Bin Laden was Killed?

Bridget Ilene Delaney
It is said that you will never forget where you were when you heard about the Al Qaeda attacks on the Twin Towers in New York. I never have. I was outside, walking to what I thought was going to be my next class in Hardtner Hall at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. This class was a Mass Communications (Journalism) class. At first, I heard a girl talking on her cell phone, but I didn't know what she was talking about other than something stupid somebody did. It was only once I got into the building that I found out what happened and that classes were canceled. Now, it is said that you will never forget where you were when you heard the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed. Being that it is so soon after the killing, I won't forget now. It's likely that I will never forget.

Not a Normal Day

The day did not start normally. My mom, sister, and I had tried to sleep in our house the previous night. This would be normal, except for the fact that our air conditioning had quit working. The house was getting too hot, so we went to a hotel. At first, we went to the LaQuinta in Lake Charles. However, they kept delaying the time our room would be ready. I called a LaQuinta in Sulphur and found out the price of the room. It was just under or just above half the price of the one in Lake Charles and the cost of the staying the night at the Sulphur hotel plus a tank of gas cost less than staying a night in Lake Charles. We went there.

An Outing

We had enjoyed being in the cool hotel room. However, we had not have any meals. I had gone to the lobby to ask about a local hamburger restaurant called Novrozsky's. It was still early enough to get food from there, so we called in the order since we could drive through to pick up the order if we did that. My sister and I went to get the food.

Returning

Novrozsky's is only a tenth of a mile away from the LaQuinta. We brought the food in from the restaurant and handed out everybody's food. We all sat at the one table in the room at that time while we each looked up information on my mom's laptop that we brought so I could do a little bit of work and e-mail could be checked. My mom turned on the TV to watch the local news, and the first thing we heard was a special report telling us that Osama bin Laden had been killed. I searched the information on Google and the latest story that posted had been post only eight minutes prior to my search.

A Memorable Event

I'm never certain how to feel when somebody that was so evil is killed. I believe in the commandment "do not kill." It is difficult to reconcile this with the understand that the military is keeping the people of the country safe.

While I may not have an exciting story, it is different. I will always have a memorable story to tell when asked where I was when I heard that Osama bin Laden had been killed.

I lived just across the Hudson River near the Towers and heard a jet flying low, screaming over my house. I thought to myself that that was odd, that the air traffic pattern didn't go that way. That was the second plane I later found out... and on board was an acquaintance of mine, flight 175's first officer Mike Horrocks. I think I will remember 9-11 far better than when UBL got killed.

I live about 15 miles from lower Manhattan, and on 9/11, I actually heard each "boom" as the planes crashed into the towers. But I didn't know what had caused the noise until it came over the car radio as I drove to work.
