As a small business coach who takes her job seriously, I have attended dozens of grand openings. At each event, my inner cheerleader kicks in and I'll admit, I get just as excited as the new business owners I work with. I think of myself as an entrepreneur's midwife. I am there to say, "push," "stop" and "breathe!" Grand openings are small business incubators that give the new "baby" a good start.

In my coaching capacity, I highly recommend holding a grand opening. In fact, I teach clients to hold one yearly. The first year begins as a grand opening kickoff and the succeeding years as anniversary events. So why do I believe grand openings work?

Attract attention
Your new business needs attention to grow. Everyone who drives by, receives a mailer or gets an email will give your business some attention - some for a few seconds, others for a lifetime. A grand opening is the "big reveal" of your logo, business name and service.

Build customer relations
At grand openings, customers expect to meet the new business owners. On this day, they can be sure to shake your hand and make your acquaintance. What a great time to establish customer relationships! This builds good, solid relationships right from the start.

Makes a mental start
I am a coach so I know how hard you have worked to get the doors open. The business doesn't start at the grand opening but long before that with a single idea or innovation. However, I find the grand opening to be the perfect mental start for my clients. Success needs measuring -- you will measure it anyway. Give it a good place to start with a big official entrance.

Boosts morale
The giant scissors, the large ribbon, and the buzz. These activities boost morale among employees and your family and friends. Nothing excites a new business more than big events like official openings. You'll find reaching your goals a bit easier with a little more wind under your sails. Get a strong start with a grand opening.

Impresses other businesses
Local businesses will know there is a new kid in town! Make an impression in the business community by holding your grand opening on a busy Friday or whatever day is active in your area. A professional look, courteous help will make you look good!
