First Sign You're Pregnant

Morning sickness is often the first sign of pregnancy that many women notice. The nausea and vomiting usually begin in the sixth week of pregnancy. Usually subsiding around the twelfth week of pregnancy. Although it is commonly called morning sickness, this can happen at any time of the day.

Morning sickness is not harmful to the mother or the child. If the Mom-to-be is having problems keeping food down, this could very well be a more serious condition than just morning sickness. It could quite possibly be a condition known as hyper emesis gravid arum. This can be harmful to the mom-to-be as well as the unborn child if it is not addressed and treated promptly by a medical person. The mom and child can essentially have serious problems caused by a minimal amount of electrolytes and nutrients in the diet that are maintained within the body.

It has been estimated at approximately half of women that have been pregnant have experienced morning sickness. Morning sickness is that nauseated feeling women get in the early stages of their pregnancy. Morning sickness can sometimes also be vomiting but not in all cases. The nausea could be due to the increased hormone levels that are now in the woman's body. Some doctors feel that morning sickness is a good thing. They feel this means the placenta is developing as it should be.

However the only real treatment that can be given in order to minimize the morning sickness is to eat small meals every couple of hours or so. By keeping saltine cracker near the mom to be at all times can be effective in minimizing the morning sickness, not always getting rid of it all together. They seem to be able to overcome the feeling within a very short period of time. Try to stay clear of smells and odors that may be a bit overpowering, as they can bring on the nauseating feeling.

Some medical professionals feel the reason for morning sickness is more than that of the placenta growing properly. Some feel it is also a way for the pregnant body to try to handle the changes it is going through. Another opinion is that pregnancy can make the senses a little sharper than normal. With a stronger sense of smell, the mom-to-be just might be a little more apt to have an episode of morning sickness. In some cases just the thought of specific things can start the nauseated feeling.

The simple things in life can make a pregnant woman feel sick to her stomach during the beginning weeks of the pregnancy. Most women stop with the signs of morning sickness by about the twelfth week of pregnancy. With a minute number of women that have it throughout their pregnancies.

Some things to avoid if you have morning sickness are lying down after you have eaten, it has been well known that this is a time when many women become nauseated during pregnancy. Do not skip a meal. Stay on the schedule you already have for your eating habits. Try to avoid spicy foods. As they can turn your stomach at just the smell of them, and generally you may end up with the morning sickness.

When you first wake up in the morning or from a nap, try not to get directly out of bed. By slowly getting out of bed you are giving your body a chance to adjust. This can keep your stomach from getting upset, thus you will not have the nauseating feeling. If you can, leave some crackers on your nightstand at night, so when you do wake up you will have something to munch on to help minimize the morning sickness.

If smells seem to be a big part of your morning sickness, open up your windows, prior to cooking. Even enlist a friend to cook for you so you do not have to be in the room with the smell. This might help in keeping your morning sickness down to a minimum.
