Why is it important to study Spanish?

Spanish is one of the top five languages spoken in the world today. According to IMAC, it was estimated in 2005 that Spanish has more native speakers (~350 million) than English (~340 million). It was also estimated that there was 42.7 million Hispanics in the United States. This means that the United States has the fifth largest Hispanic population in the world! Many Americans, especially young people, are beginning to study Spanish either in high school and college or during their free time. If an employee can speak both Spanish and English in the workplace, opportunities will increase for this individual because of the increasing Spanish-speaking population causes businesses to have more Spanish-speaking customers. Wonderful jobs in medicine, teaching, and retail are available for those who speak Spanish as a second language. Learning Spanish also enables someone to keep up with advancing technology in the world. The strategies used in learning Spanish can be applied to other academic subjects such as Mathematics or even learning another foreign language. Learning any type of foreign language enables someone to learn about new cultures and customs and make new friends. Learning Spanish may be difficult at times, but it is worth it!

What is the best way to study Spanish?

It is very important to study Spanish everyday since Spanish builds with every lesson. Once a student becomes behind, it is usually very hard for that student to catch-up again. For vocabulary, flashcards and self-made quizzes are the best way to prepare for class. When studying grammar, it is important to review the exercises from past homework assignments and complete similar problems to check for understanding. It is also beneficial to study in groups where students can help each other where their skills are lacking. Tutoring by someone who is experienced in Spanish is also a very helpful tool in learning the Spanish language.

I wish I had your Spanish knowledge. I took French in high school and college. Spanish would have been a better choice.

Great article. I wish I could hear the pronunciations! There is a lot of similarities with French in the numbers and counting system.

Interestingly well done....I think Vincents suggestion might be a good thing for you to look into.

Can you make audio files? My wife would like to learn some Spanish. I am studying Russian. I would be willing to help her with Spanish if someone made audio files for AC. I think it might be a hit, but I can't say for sure...
