First Time Author? Manuscript Rejected Over and Over? Consider Tate Publishing!

Tate Publishing Makes it Easy for First Time Authors

Ricky Doan
Publishing my first book. Scary! It's hard enough to even overcome the insecurites of thinking anyone would even want to read what you've written, much less trying to find a publisher that thinks it's good enough to print. Rejection is never easy! Plus you have submission standards, fees, royalties, self-publishing and distribution vs. a publishing house, gah!! It never ends!! But I found a publisher who made the whole thing easy.

I spent 3 years working on a book entitled Can You Stand, pouring my heart and soul into it. When it was finally complete, I printed it out, laid it aside and thought I would use it to help people in my church. But, God didn't ask me what I thought. He began to deal with me about submitting my manuscript to a publisher. Yeah...right! Like I had any idea how to do that. It was only through God's guidance and google that I was even able to locate publishers. God led my eyes to Tate Publishing on my google search results and thus it began.

Tate's website is very "user friendly" and easy to navigate. On their main page you will find a "submit a manuscript" link. Attach your manuscript in a Word document and you are on your way. It's that easy! Of course, human nature, I didn't expect them to accept my manuscript. It's the first one I had ever written and the only publisher I had submitted it too. But lo and behold 4 weeks later I received notice that they wanted to publish my work!
From there the process got really fun. The president of the company, Dr. Richard Tate, called me on the phone personally and made himself very available. He was informative, didn't care to talk and really helped put my nerves at ease. A Christian based company located in Mustang Oklahoma, Dr. Tate shared with me that he and his wife had started the company specifically to help first time authors. Having been through the process of trying to find a publisher and getting a complete, marketable work, he realized that it shouldn't be that hard. Therefore Tate Publishing was formed.

Unlike many mainline publishers who take control of your work, Tate believes your work is just that: Yours! You keep and maintain all rights to your work and are even welcome to publish it with other publishers. You won't find that many places. As an author, I realize how much time, research and mind boggling thought to produce a manuscript. My book it only 104 pages, yet it took me 3 years! But, I used many scripture references, researched many aspects of the book and made sure when I wrote it that I wasn't writing opinion, but fact. Point remains it was an arduous process and I had alot of me invested in it. I didn't want to give it away and not be in control of it. Tate allowed me to keep control.

Editing was the first process. A young lady named Lauren Downen was the editor for my project and she was great! She sent my manuscript back with all the suggested changes. I could choose if I wanted to make the changes! She left it completely in my control. That process took a few e-mails and several weeks but when all was said and done, it was a solid manuscript and off to the publishers.

From there it went to layout, graphics design for the cover, and finally ended up the finished product you can findat the following link.

Everyone at Tate was wonderful to work with, friendly and very helpful. You can view the testimonial page from other Tate authors. They also produce your work in Audio book format as a "Tate out Loud" production. Marketing is handled by contacting bookstores in your area, sending letters posters etc.

There is an investment fee for authors to get their work published through Tate, but I can tell you first hand it is more than worth it. If you have a manuscript that you've been sitting on or even it it's been rejected by publisher after publisher, give Tate a chance. They can help your dreams become reality.

I published with Tate in 2005. I wouldn't say they are scammers, just hybrids between vanity and mainline publishers.

.....But I think most people (myself included) who sign with them do so because they feel great that a publisher accepted their manuscript. We as new authors have no idea how much money we're losing when we sign with Tate. I got about $20 in royalty checks in the first 6 months after release - nothing since. Other than that, I sold some copies to coworkers and church members. I invested hundreds more in advertising.

.....The marketing dept. has plenty of options to help the author, but most cost extra, and they want the author to tell them what to do. I wanted a marketing department to lead me, not the other way around.

.....I am finishing a fiction novel right now, but will only publish if I find an agent who believes in the merit of my work and will find a publisher who will pay me instead of the other way around.

if this is a "CHRISTIAN" company, then why do they scalp you right from the start? 4gs to get printed? WOW!! is that all?? (sarcasm) how the (expletive) is this helping out first time publishers?!? now what about those first timers with no money? where's my help Mr Tate? writing is all I know. Some christian you are. If Jesus was the head of your company, what would He do for us first timers?

I have actually had a very enjoyable and profitable relationship with Tate Publishiing. As a first time author it was very difficult to find a publisher willing to take on my book. With Tate there is a fee but it covered the editing, the illustrations, the printing, the distribution and the trailers...and it is available in all major bookstores at this time. Nothing but good things to say about everyone I worked with. Looking forward to writing another one and working with Tate again.

"Unlike many mainline publishers," they take your money for printing your work. They don't pay you for publishing it. Vanity press is vanity press, no matter the subject of the book.

I am amazed at how many "Bashers" there are. This was simply a piece I wrote as a testament to how Tate worked for ME. If you have other publishing offers that suit you better then feel free to go with them. This is not a "puff" piece nor an advertisement, simply my take on this company which I am entitled to write about. Simply put, if you don't like what I write then by all means, don't read the article.

Ricky, your comments read like an advertising piece for Tate. Reading your puff piece makes me even more skeptical of Tate.

What reputable publishing house charges their authors an "investment fee" like this? If one is willing and able to pay $4000, then go with Tate. It's no lie that they'll work to package your book into a salable product, but authors should expect that from a publishing house. What they should NOT expect is to pay a fee for such services.

It's good to hear that many Tate authors seem happy with their experience (including the $4000 investment) but a publishing house -charging- an author rather than -paying- him or her is not the industry norm. Do you see mainstream, legitimate publishers like HarperCollins doing this? No, absolutely not.

So Ricky, how many retailer shelves is your book on?

  • wy10/10/2009

people do not have 4,000 to invest in up front, if we did we would take it to the printer and do it ourselfves.

Convenience has no part in reporting my view of Tate publishing. I'm sure AC would welcome your editorial at the cons of Tate Publishing. Have fun!
