First Time Voters: Democratic Vs. Republican Party

Greg Seltz
Though it is taught in High School, how many of you first-time voters actually understand the two parties governing our country? Educate yourselves. Many times we may find ourselves simply voting for the presidential candidate that delivers the best speech, as we acknowledge their promise for revamping our economy/society. I'm sure that friends and family are also a deciding factor in the final vote. But have you ever labeled yourself a Democrat or Republican?

"The Democratic Party is committed to keeping our nation safe and expanding opportunity for every American" (The Democratic Party, 2009, para. 1). Sensible enough, right? The Democratic goals also include security, employment, affordable health care, and a retirement package for all Americans. They are against the war in Iraq and would rather find alternatives to oil; embracing concerns and problems within our own country before attempting to rebuild another. All in all, it appears that Democrats simply want to do what is right, insisting that each individual experiences the American Dream of prosperity. I am convinced; but is it all hype or is this country just damaged beyond repair?

Now we take a look at the Democratic adversary. From history lessons, I recall the Republican Party as that who abolished slavery, returned power to state governments, and enacted women suffrage rights. The party beliefs also focus on environmental concern, reducing taxes, and equal opportunity. Republicans appears to be a well-rounded party, engaged in adopting laws that are most beneficial to our society.

After briefly researching the two parties, I can't help but question their beliefs and practices. Where did it all go wrong? What are the disadvantages of claiming one party over the other? Am I an Independent if I simply choose to adopt the beliefs of both parties? For instance, I agree with the Democrats that each of my countrymen/women should have affordable health care and a secure retirement, but does will this result in an increase on taxes? These are questions one should ask themself when casting that vote. Although a candidate offers a universal health care plan, notice that the money needed to fund such may increase taxes for all. For individuals who already have secure health packages or maintain veteran status, universal health care will not benefit them and simply result in more tax dollars as they involuntarily fund John or Jane's hospital operation. It may be ethical, but ethics don't pay the expenses.

Though you may feel more comfortable adopting the party status handed down by your parents, have you ever questioned whether their beliefs are similar to your own; or have you even considered embracing a change? Though each party strongly supports this countries best interests, those interests will not be compatible with each citizen. By questioning what is right for you, you are partaking in the civil liberties the United States government provides us with. Feel free to make your own choices concerning party affiliation, but first, do the necessary research on each candidate and become aware of their representations.
