Currently, there is the possibility that some of the tainted meat has been distributed to meat packing companies in Detroit along with Indianapolis and to Wal-Mart stores in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Wyoming.

Another major meat recall is circulating the United States as National Beef Packing Company in Dodge City Kansas, is recalling thousands of pounds of ground beef. Just a little over a week ago Cargill Value Added Meats Retail based also in Kansas, had announced an immediate recall of approximately 36 million frozen ground turkey products.

This recall had been announced Friday by The U.S. Department of Agriculture, that National Beef was recalling 60,000 pounds of beef after the Ohio Department of Agriculture had discovered bacteria during the testing. This recall is a Class I recall with high health risks.

At this time at least three major grocery chains are affected by this recall. The chains of Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., Publix Super Markets Inc., and Kroger Company have announced that the recall is mainly in the Southeastern region of the United States. The states mainly affect are; Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. However, the meat in question was sent to several distributors and potentially could have been repackaged for consumers and sold throughout the nation.

Children are most often affected by E.coli than adults of E.coli 015:H7. Most people with the infection will have the following symptoms:

Severe stomach cramps and severe tenderness in the stomach

Diarrhea, water at beginning but most of the time becomes very bloody

Nausea and vomiting

Bloody diarrhea is common in confirmed cases of E.coli; however, the bacteria can be a possible cause of non-bloody diarrhea. For more information on when to call your physician about non-bloody diarrhea the information can be viewed at WebMD at Diarrhea Age 12 and over and Diarrhea Age 11 and younger.

The symptoms from an E.coli infection most of the time ends in one week without any further problems. However, severe blood and kidney problems can occur within two weeks after the beginning of diarrhea. These problems could cause kidney failure and at times long-term disability and even death in some children and older adults.

The Department of Agriculture is cautioning people to cook ground beef at a temperature of at least 160 degrees. Check the temperature with a food thermometer which measures internal temperatures.

Kroger, the nation's largest traditional grocery store chain, note the recalled products include ground chuck, ground beef patties, meatballs and meat loaf made in the stores.

Consumers should return the beef on the recall list for a full refund. The packages have a "sell by" date and those dates once again are between July 25 and August 12th. Please note that Winn-Dixie products include ground chuck and patties with a "sell by" dates from July 31 to August 12.
