First-Generation College Students Are Role Models

Jordan Smith
First-generation college students are definitely role models, however it is up to you to decide if you would like to be known as a positive role model or a negative one. The choice is yours. First-generation college students are considered to be pioneers forging into unknown territory and preparing the way for others who will follow the path to higher learning.

First-generation college students are known to be highly motivated. These students are not afraid to excel. They are normally looked upon as trend setters. They are not only looked upon as role models in their families and in the community but also among their peers. In other words they have a spirit of self-pride about themselves. This does not mean that they have a spirit of arrogance, but they respect themselves and others. They have a desire to obtain so much more and they are willing to use and share what they have learned with others. The students' whole perception is to do well.

College is truly a totally new experience. There is no one there to tell you when to go to bed, when to get up or when to go to class. You must be able to make wise decisions. They realize that the choices they make today will affect their future.

Being a first-generation college student is a great adventure. There will be time for fun, but it must have its proper place and not interfere with your goals and study time.

Being a first-generation college student can also be a little scary or even a little stressful as well, because you are about to go somewhere that you have never been. You must realize that you are not only there for yourself, but you are there for your mother, your father, their mother and everyone in your family that wanted to go to college, but for one reason or another was not able to attend.

It does not stop there you will also set the stage for those who will follow behind you. They will have someone to look up to. They will be able to say my sister, my brother, my cousin etc. went to college and graduated with honors! If they did it, with hard work and determination I can do it too. By being labeled as a good role model your name will penetrate many generations to come.

Being a first-generation college student is a great thing, but your goal should be-to become a first-generation college graduate. Keep your eyes on the prize.
