First-Person Account of the 2011 Annie Awards

UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California

The Annie Awards are my favorite from the awards shows that appear at this time of year. This year, the 2011 Annie Awards, which took place on Saturday, February 5th, 2011, was an experience that I was able to see live. It was a lot of fun. I'm a big kid at heart, so you can imagine what a thrill it really was for me. This is what my first-person experience was like.

The 38th Annual Annie Awards honored excellence in animation to this year's best-animated movies. The ceremony was held at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by Tom Kenny, the atmosphere was charged as "How to Train Your Dragon" won the Annie Award for "Best Animated Feature". The movie went on to win a stunning 10 other Annie Awards. That was very impressive.

The losers of the evening were some serious notables such as "Toy Story 3" were a real surprise. This was a wonderful animated film that many expected would be a winner. Rumors are that Disney was not pleased with the award process. Some attendees at the event were quoted as saying: "last year Disney/ Pixar was on protest against the process that the Annie Awards uses". To sum it up, apparently it's a problem between Disney/ Pixar and DreamWorks. It turns out that many of the judges actually work for DreamWorks. I have to agree that voting should be neutral or at least divided equally.

Some of the other awards for the night were some of my choices as well: Ryan Page, from Sony Pictures won the award: "Character Animation in a Live Action Production" for the animated film "Alice in Wonderland". I agree with the award. This was an incredible talent for which the award was well deserved.

More notables were, Ernie Gilbert for "T.U.F.F. Puppy" by Nickelodeon Studios. I am a huge fan of the Nickelodeon Studio; so this was a thrill win for me as well. The award for "Best Animated Video Game" went to Limbo for "Playdead". Everyone that knows me well knows that I am a video gamer at heart. So this category is always a favorite of mine. I was pleased at this win by this avant-garde production.

The evening was a wonderful experience for me. The awards were fun to see and the entertainment was engaging. I would definitely go again to see this live at the Annie Awards. While Disney/ Pixar and DreamWorks duke it out, we can watch and enjoy the entertainment.
