Fish Illness: Popeye

There are many different types of illnesses that your fish can get. There is one illness which makes your fish look as if it has a ring around the fishes eye. It's known as popeye and it's easily treated. All you have to do is go to the pet store and purchase medication which treats popeye. Remember that before you treat your fish you must take the filter cartridges out of the water. The carbon inside of the filter cartridges will actually removed all of the copper out of the water which will make the medication useless.

Sometimes your fish will have a ring around one eye and sometimes the ring will appear to be around both eyes. You will want to treat the fish with medication for popeye and make sure that the fish do not have a secondary bacteria infection. If your fish has white spots or torn fins you will need to treat the fish for ich and fin rot as well. Sometimes all of the illnesses can come at one time because of the fact that the fish are stressed out and their immune systems will not be able to fight off other illnesses.

You will want to treat all of the fish in the main tank. The problem is in the water and if you remove the fish and medicate the fish the other fish could get sick with popeye as well. Make sure that you treat all of the fish and make sure to remove the filter cartridges and throw them away. You can also purchase freshwater salt to add to your aquarium which will help out the fish as well. One of the main causes that fish get sick is because of stress which could be from overfeeding or overcrowding.

Make sure that you do a water change after you have treated the fish until the popeye is gone. You will want do change the amount of water recommended on the bottle and then you will need to place new filter cartridges into the tank to remove the medication once the fill is healed up. If you think that your fish has another illness as well you will need to figure out which illness your fish has. If you have any snails in your fish tank you will need to remove them because often times they will die from the copper based medication.
