Fish Oil for Joint Health and Arthritis Relief

Kim Daugherty
There are over one hundred different types of arthritis, each different from the next and affecting those of all ages. However, the hallmark symptom of arthritis is inflammation of the joint, which can cause pain and limited motion. Ultimately, arthritis can lead to long-term pain and permanent damage to joints if not properly treated. Regardless of the type of arthritis you have been diagnosed with, numerous studies have shown that fish oil can improve your overall joint health and help to ease the symptoms of arthritis.

Fish oil is known to be a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown by many studies over the years to have numerous health benefits. One of the many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is that it reduces inflammation, including joint inflammation associated with arthritis. In many studies conducted over the years concerning fish oil and arthritis, most studies show that people who began taking fish oil supplements or otherwise increased their consumption of foods with natural fish oil experienced decreased joint inflammation and pain. Many study participants were able to decrease their dosage of corticosteroids or NSAIDs over time and regular consumption of fish oil. In many cases, better results were experienced by study participants when fish oil was consumed in conjunction with olive oil. While decreased arthritis symptoms of joint inflammation and pain were a result of consuming fish oil regularly, fish oil did not reduce joint damage.

Fish oil is found naturally in such fish as mackerel, salmon, herring, tuna, and others. Most people do not consume enough of these foods in their regular diet, and may benefit from taking a regular fish oil supplement. To see benefits in your arthritis symptoms and joint health, studies suggest that regular intake of fish oil is needed rather than sporadic consumption. Immediate pain relief and reduction in joint inflammation should not be expected. It is advisable to seek the advice of your doctor before making changes in the care of your arthritis, including taking fish oil supplements.

When taking fish oil supplements or increasing your intake of natural sources of fish oil, you may also experience a wide range of other health benefits. Fish oil has also been associated with improved heart health, improved memory, decreased risk for some types of cancers, improved skin health, and more.
