Fish: Safe or Unsafe

M Pears
Every since I was a small child I have always been told by my parents and by school officials that eating cookies, cakes, french fries, and to much red meat was not at all good for me to eat. I was also told that by eating any types of green veggies and baked chicken and most of all fish. Those are some of the best foods that you can have in your daily eating plan until now. I always believed that fish was great for me, but now I am so confused very unsure about is it safe or not. I understand that fish is packed with lots of vitamins, protein, as well as great minerals and what I have always loved about fish was the low calories that it has. Now I am hearing that to much fish can cause depression and it has been known to cause certain types of cancers. It has been stated that fish has dangerous toxins in it like polychlorinated biphenyls, and mercury as well as pesticides. And since 2004 the sale of some fish and tuna has dropped. The fear of pregnant women risking losing there unborn child over fish because of the amount of mercury that it had in it. Some people say that you should eat more fish and some people say don't even try to eat your daily recommended dose that's required on your food pyramid.

It is now updated that you should be able to eat some fish twice a week and it will be harmless to your health salmon, mackerel, herring, also halibut are all good sources of fish that studies show to have lots of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish that has omega-3 in it is a very great source cause omega-3 helps your blood vessels and that is why eating certain fish can be great for your heart but not all fish will help your heart in this manner. The use of industrial plants and power plants have polluted our air and has got into the rivers, oceans, and lakes and this has effected our fish and this is the cause of the toxin in the fish. Low mercury level seafood's are lobsters, oysters, scallops, crabs, spiny lobsters shrimp all of these are very low with the mercury level. Keep in mind that costly priced fish don't equal better so don't be fooled by the price.

For a more better choice of seafood try to get the canned red or even pink salmon in the can. You can also try the tuna in the can the best pick is the light try to eat less of the white or the albacore tuna. Eating salmon, canned light tuna, sardines, tilapia, mahimahi all those are okay to eat in moderation. The monk fish, skate, giant prawns, red snappers are the next best to eat but be careful of your intake. The blue fin tuna, shark, swordfish, bluefish, grouper, or the king mackerel are the seafood's that you should avoid to eat as much as you can always be aware of your intake when eating those types of seafood they are the high risk seafood's. Sharks, bluefish, king mackerel, and swordfish should never be served as a food, but some people do eat them so just watch your intake and be aware of what you are putting in your body. With any fish it's your health if you in anyway feel uncomfortable about eating any type seafood do your research and stay safe.
