Purchasing medication to place in your fish tank will not clear up the problem. Purchasing drops or medication is a complete waste of money when you have cloudy water. The first thing that you need to do to your fish tank is replace your filter cartridges. The main purpose of your filter cartridges are to remove harmful elements in the water and keep the water clear. If you haven't changed the cartridges in a long time, this is your problem. You will want to replace the old cartridges with new filter cartridges.
You will also want to change the water as well. One cause of cloudy water is because the ammonia and nitrate levels are high. If the levels are too high your water will become cloudy. You will want to change about 20% of the water and then the water will clear up. You will also need to siphon out your rock and clean it out. This will also help to clear up your water. After you clean your fish tank water and rock you will notice that the water will not be as cloudy. After an hour or two it will clear up even more because of the new filter cartridges.
You never want to purchase medication or drops to clear up the cloudy water. That is just hiding the real problem. If you have plants in your tank that are dying or pieces of your plants have broken off, you will want to remove them from your fish tank because they could be another reason that the water is cloudy in your fish tank. If the water change and new filter cartridges are not helping you will need to do another water change later on in the day to give the water time to clear up. You will usually want to wait at least 6 hours for the water to get clear.
