Fisher Price Smart Cycle Review

Should You Buy It?

Robin Neorr
It's a video game and a way to get active toddlers to burn off some of that energy they have stored up on rainy and snowy days. It is the all in one Fisher Price SmartCycle.

Sure you can go out an purchase the Wii Fit, but if you are on a budget this works just as well for getting your kids to get and stay active during not so nice weather. The combination of activity and learning is excellent for the child's development.

It is made for children from the ages of three to six years old. You do not have to pedal in order to play all of the games, but using the pedals is a great way to get your kids active during video game play. Some of the games can be played just by steering, but in my opinion if I wanted them to steer I would just break out my old Atari 2600.

I purchased this for my two year old, and she easily fits in it. It costs around $90.00 and rarely goes on sale. The SmartCycle is easy to put together and is a plug and play system so there is very little set up to get it to work. You do have to initially put the SmartCycle together, which will require a screwdriver, but if I can do it, anyone can.

The SmartCycle comes with the "Learning Adventure" game which requires your child to peddle and steer the bikes wheels as she tries to catch letters of the alphabet. There are a few obstacles involves such as some tighter turns and mud puddles, but this game is easy to understand and mess free. There are also other adventure paths such as "Math Mountain" where your child will learn about numbers, counting, and math.

The child controls the games and activities with the help of the joystick and buttons that is directly under the handlebars.

Although it has not happened yet my child will more then likely outgrow the one game that the SmartCycle comes with. Fisher Price knows this and has made a wide variety of other games for a child to play. Children can go on adventures with Barbie, Diego, or even Dora the Explorer. These additional cartridges range in price from thirty to forty dollars and can be purchased based on the age of the child playing the games.

This toy has very few downsides in my opinion. It is easy to set up and play as long as you read the instructions. The initial price of the item is fair, however building a collection of smart cycle cartridges will cost you a small fortune so I would recommend looking for additional cartridges on craigslist or ebay to save money.

What a great product. Now they need to make something like this for grannies who spend too much time on the computer. (:
