Fisherman Tales of the Nightmare Kind

carol gibson

A dreamscape crowd of protestors are wearing sportsman type clothing, plaid flannel jackets and ball caps which are great for storing extra fish hooks. They are a hardy looking lot, weathered faces telling of their love of the great outdoors. They are a part of everyday life around the Great Lakes region. One of the fishermen in the crowd carries a sign that says "Save the Humans."

Usually they come and go at daybreak. They might be sipping coffee or eating breakfast at an open-all-night restaurant that caters to fishermen.

After the coffee and eats, the next stop is the bait store for minnows. The one with a humorous turn of phrase about fishermen on a portable sign is always busy. Then there's a fill up down the road, because it's a lot cheaper than gassing up once on the lake. Some guys filet their own fish, but most take their catches to be commercially prepared.

A strange sounding news commentary plays out like a radio in a hollow echoing sound through the room. It's a bad dream. . .

"The local economy gets a boost during fishing season. Cottage rentals, and supply stores, grocery stores, and boat supply shops must make their profit quickly when it's warm weather season. A nearby town population booms from a mere ten thousand to a million.

They are part of the many that are soon to be a target of President Obama's allegiance with "green" organizations. These are the green groups bearing initials like WWF, IFAW, and it's rumored that NOAA has joined in on this group action to ban fishing.

The region's economy hangs in the balance as Obama announced that he isn't going to listen to any more objections. Some feel that public input into the process of legislation against fishing was a pretense from the very beginning.

The announcer tells of looming danger to local economies unless these sportsmen get in contact with local representatives and statesmen." More of the nightmare commentary now sounds strangely muted. A few hollow thumps come from somewhere distant integrating into the dreamscape consciousness.

"The economic disaster impacts communities in north and central Canada where a well managed bear hunting season is abolished.

The double speak concern for the economy and job creation makes President Obama's interests unclear. He's showing more of an allegiance to the World Wildlife Fund and the International Fund for Animal Welfare."

The brightly colored Save the Humans sign moves back and forth, fading in and out of view amongst the protestors who are chanting "Keep fishing and hunting alive. Save the Humans. Save the humans"

Jiggle, jiggle. "Hey - wake up sleepyhead. We're going fishing this morning, remember? I'm going out to hook up the boat."

"Oh, it's you. I'm so glad. You woke me up from a horrible, horrible dream. O.K. I'll be ready in a minute."

I like the idea of sun/earth day - how is it we forgot one day for the warmth and sunshine it provides?
