You will need a light jacket because you never know when it will cloud up and rain. It is often chilly during certain times of the year when you are near a larger body of water. Any time we go fishing at the dam in Eufaula, Oklahoma we always carry a jacket in the truck for this reason. If you do late night fishing trips like we do, this will save you many times.
You will also need heavy pants for a few different reasons. If you ever have to walk to a fishing spot, you may have to climb through an area with brush, bushes, or even briars. This will prevent you from getting scraped up. Another reason you will want pants is to protect your skin from the sun. They will also keep you warm during cold weather.
Boots are necessary when you will be wade fishing, I will explain more on this in a minute. This will protect you from sharp rock and glass that might be in the water. You never know what kind of things you will step on in the water.
Short sleeved shirts should be worn in the summer, they will keep you cool. They will also protect the more sensitive skin on your back, neck and upper arms from the sun. Also if you get chilled you can easily layer a light jacket over the top in the summer, spring, and fall. You can also put a coat on over it easily in the winter.
Next you should always wear a cap or hat of some kind. It will protect you from the heat in the summer, and it will help keep you from getting hypothermia in the winter. You heat does escape through your head, so you should always protect it.
You should also have waders. These will be used if you ever do any wade fishing. This is part of the reason why you need boots. The boots will easily slip over the waders to protect them from any damage if you have purchased stocking-foot waders. The waders will keep your clothes dry while you are fishing, but also they will keep you from getting too cold if you do this type of fishing in the winter, fall, and spring. Even though it is hot in the summer there are many rivers, such as the Illinois River in Gore, Oklahoma that are cold year round. The water is so cold in this river that trout can survive year round.
With all of this fishing gear you will be easily prepared for almost any kind of weather and fishing! Have fun, stay safe, and stay dry! All of the items can be found at your local stores, but the waders. You can purchase them at most sporting good stores. You can buy them at Bass Pro Shop here.
