Fishing the Great Lakes State: A Guide to Fishing Licenses in Michigan

Christine H
With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, over 11,000 inland lakes and 36,350 miles of rivers and streams, Michigan offers plenty of fishing opportunities. This summer on June 13th and 14th you can even fish for free, while still adhering to state fishing regulations.

If you're looking to fish more often in Michigan you will need to purchase a fishing license. Michigan's fishing license requirements are easy to understand and follow. As a resident of this great state it will cost you a mere $15 which is valid from March 1 thru March 31 the following year and good for all species except trout and salmon. To add trout and salmon to your license there is a $13 upgrade fee. Of course Michigan gives senior citizens discounts to those 65 and older for a cost of $6 for the license and $5 for the upgrade. If your looking for summer fun for the kids, licenses for them are $2 for those 17 years and older and free for those under the age of 17. As always there is an increase in fees for our out of state friends.

To purchase a Michigan fishing license you can do one of two things. You can go to your local sporting goods store or convenience store. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources website offers a quick search to help you to locate the nearest license dealer to you. Also at the DNR website you can purchase a license online.

To obtain the latest fishing laws for the state of Michigan you can download the 2008 Michigan Fishing Guide for free. This informative booklet provides information on fishing laws and regulations, licensing requirements, boating information, and much more. This booklet is updated every April, so be sure to check back for updated licensing fees.
