There remains a long way to go when kids' fitness is being considered. It is said that kids spend 3 hours a day watching television, and 5 hours a day using media. If the majority of the kids are sedentary in this manner, any discussion about kids' fitness tends to be difficult.
Childhood obesity remains at very high levels. But there is a fitness movement underway to change our perceptions of fitness. There is more child-oriented exercise equipment, after-school clubs for fitness, and more emphasis is given for recess times in schools. Video games these days are more physical and interactive, requiring hand to eye coordination. Programs after school educate children about healthy lifestyles and teach about the importance of doing exercises for a healthy life.
There are also formal exercise routines like going to a gym. There is a place for workouts in the life of a kid. Some adult gyms have a section with fitness equipment geared towards kids. The equipment is smaller than their adult counterparts, but otherwise they are the same. Steppers, elliptical, strength machines and stationary bikes are all available in inviting colors and they are arranged in a circuit format so the kids are always on the move. The area is usually painted using brighter colors and has different music tracks playing than in an adult area.
Adults generally tend to schedule fitness workouts as part of their busy schedules. But for teens and children, fitness involves playtime. Climbing, jumping, playing tag and running are examples of how children get exercise. Any planned workouts need to relate to how children play with each other.
Some silly and humorous workouts, agility play and games can all help to catch kids' attention and to keep them moving. Kids' fitness routines usually involve a combination of exercise and laughter.
There may be some children who are dangerously obese. For them, fitness routines need to be under doctor supervision. They may involve working on a bike or a treadmill. The approach will be more difficult and slower than for an average child. A child who is dangerously obese needs group family therapy, psychological assistance and nutritional counseling involving the entire family. Their lifestyles will need change and will involve family participation.
There are also child athletes among kids. These kids spend time in the pool or gym, doing weight training, and formal workouts that are based on sports. These kids are advised to find some time in their busy training schedules for playing with others.
Irrespective of the type of children, kids' fitness has great opportunities. More changes are being made to accommodate children in exercise routines. Fitness routines for kids need to find a fine balance between fun and games and proven techniques of fitness.
