Fitting a Plus Size Bra

How to Properly Measure for a Plus Size Bra

Olivia Cummings
Properly measuring for a bra is a five step process. It is critical for you to take good measurements in order to have any chance of getting the correct size. Even with a proper measurement you must understand that the same size bra made by two different manufacturers will fit completely differently. Once you know your size, try on several different styles until you get one that fits comfortably, offers the support you need as well as the coverage you desire.

The steps to determining the proper bra size are;

Step one - Measure around your rib cage directly beneath your ribcage. Exhale as you take the measurement and record the number. This measurement reflects your band size.

Step two - Measure the distance around your chest above your breasts. Have the tape measure under your armpits and record the measurement.

Step three - Measure the distance around your breasts at the fullest point. Some instructions tell you to measure across the nipple area. If you have large breasts the fullest portion may or may not be equal with the nipples. Be certain to measure the fullest portion, regardless of where that might be.

Step four - Subtract the measurement from step two from the measurement in step three. Record this number to be used in calculating your cup size.

Step five - Calculate your cup size using the chart below.

2.5" to 3.5" = C
3.5" to 4.5" = D
4,5" to 6.0" = DD (Or E for some bras)
6.0" to 7.0" = DDD ( or F for some bras)
7.0" to 8.0" = G
8.0" to 9.0" = GG
9.0" to 10.0" = H
10.0" to 11.0" = HH
11.0" to 12.0" = J
12.0" to 13.0" = JJ

If possible, and if you are not to modest, it is often better to have some do the measuring for you. It is critical the tape measure be level and parallel with the floor in order to get a good measurement. It is also far easier for someone to get a proper reading of the tape from eye level than looking down and trying to read upside down. If you are small breasts you can take the measurements while nude. With fuller breasts it is better to measure while wearing a standard bra. This will help support your breasts at the level you want them in the new bra, thus allowing for a more accurate measurement and fit.
