Five 2010 Fashion Tips for 65+ Women

Fashion Updates for Seniors

JUNEANN REED
For women ages 65 and over, 2010 has many simple and easy fashion finds to update you and your wardrobe.

First of all, think about how good you will feel by just giving away or discarding some things that don't quite fit. Or, maybe you never really liked them - ever. Just do it! Now, on to your updated look and wardrobe.

The first new thing you should buy in 2010 is a great purse or bag to update your look. It will go nicely with those black and white pants and tops. Price is no issue

The second thing to bring to your new look is a scarf or two. Remember, it's spring/summer now, so you don't want some big, heavy bulky thing. Look for something smaller and trim that will make your outfit pop. Scarves can be found in any price range and any mixture of colors. You can knot them, wear them hanging straight down or double them around your neck. Or, you may choose to tie a pretty scarf to your bag or purse. Some of you may even be brave enought to knot it around your waist.

Buy a smart cover-up - they are available in great varieties of colors and styles and sizes. Wherever you live, there will a time you need a slight cover-up or that you just want to wear a topper over a t-shirt. You will find a variety of sleeve lengths, sweater-types, shirt-types, casual or with lots of bling. It may have no buttons, fancy buttons, zip or tie at the waist. Think about what you wear and your body prior to purchasing that special cover-up you will grab so often. Yes, you could wear that old sweatshirt, but why not buy something cute and perky that will update your whole outfit and your feeling about yourself.

Look around for some stunning jewelry. Again, that need not be expensive. Clip on watches are really hot items in the stores. They're so simple to slip on your wrist and can be found for less than $20 at Kohl's or a variety of other places. Maybe you'd like a lime green or polk-dot watch band to mix or match with your outfit. Bracelets, earrings and necklaces can make your look complete and updated. Perhaps you won't need to purchase anything, but just check through what you already have and pair them with something different for a great look. Being a senior, often times we have something from years past that can help pull off the lastest trend.

Dresses are in - and they can be so cool for summer. Yes, cool because of hot temps or just look "cool" to wear. If you don't feel comfy in a sundress, wear a little topper for some cover. You will find dresses of all lengths, fabrics, and colors of comfort and joy. Add a cute pair of shoes. Flip flops are fun, but not all of us can wear those. But summer shoes - sandle type - can be found everywhere that will enhance and update your summer wardrobe. Seniors and everyone can learn to adapt bodies to styles that fit and look best on themselves.

Many of us are working to lose a size or two, but make an effort to have clothes that fit well and look nice on you. Notice how much better you can and will feel about yourself. It's fun to receive compliments on a great orange top. [You know, that orange top and fringy scarf you bought on a whim. You'd never worn orange before, but that day you just had to buy it.] Or it could be that old black and white you've had in the closet forever, but you've livened it up a polka-dot scarf - or shoes. You'll love it!

Remember also, to compliment or take time to tell another woman that you love something, or she really looks lovely, [nice, sharp, beautiful, stylish] in whatever she's wearing. You'll be glad you did and it may be the best thing that happens to her all day. And, you'll probably see her walking away with more of a spring in her foot! Wouldn't you, no matter if your 25, 65 or 85?

Finally, even though you may feel you perhaps shouldn't spend much money on yourself, you can do it. Watch the sales, shop at box stores, outlets, garage sales and consignment shops or go on-line. Be picky. Don't buy an old shapeless dull t-shirt, but keep your eye out for attractive jewelry or other inexpensive clothing items. Make them be something you love. Don't just buy something to "make-do." And don't just give up because you feel like you're old. Open up your heart and your mind to others - and wear that orange top!
