Cut several (about a dozen) triangle shapes out of cardboard, cut yellow felt to cover cardboard, and glue together. Starting at the top of the hood, moving down the spine, glue on finished triangles for the Dino's spikes. Glue eyes on top, sides of hood. If you'd like, cut out small white felt triangles, glue around face opening of hood (without cardboard to keep them soft and safe) for teeth. Use your gloves for 'soft claws' by using scraps of felt to cut long, thin triangles and glue on fingertips. Can also use yellow felt to cut out a large circle to glue on the tummy of the hoodie, finish with some creative face painting and your done!
If your pressed for time, this costume is simple and quick, a tool man! All you need is a white shirt (and a flannel over shirt, especially if it's cool out), jeans, boots, cardboard, markers, an old belt, brown felt, and a plain colored baseball cap.
To make a tool belt, cut four squares out of brown felt, glue into pocket shapes, glue pockets onto an old belt, and fill with plastic toy tools (or use your cardboard and get creative making your own!). On your hat, write 'Tool Man' etc, get dressed and your done in minutes, this one is great if you don't want to spend a lot of money too!
For a revived traditional costume, consider a robot! You will need gray sweatshirt and pants, old shoes (opt), face paint, a cardboard box (large enough to cover torso of child), silver spray paint, gray head band, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, markers, aluminum foil, gray gloves and other notions to decorate.
Measure and cut arm holes and a neck hole, by cutting box in half (tape on later with gray duct tape to wear), then spray paint box silver, decorate as desired (using tinfoil, markers, glitter etc). Twist pipe cleaners onto headband (less cumbersome then a traditional cardboard 'box hat'), gluing on cotton balls covered in foil (if desired), paint the face gray and enjoy! Another great idea is using the silver tube dryer vent as arm and leg covers!
To be a scary mad scientist, you'll need a long sleeve adult size old, white dress shirt (unless of course you have a lab coat hanging around), needs to be long enough to be 'jacket length.' Costume 'blood,' hair gel, face paint, old underclothing, foil and cardboard.
Write on jacket 'mad scientist' to help get the idea across, then splatter with fake blood, if desired repeat with their old clothing. Be careful, this probably won't wash out. Scare up their hair using hair gel, making as messy as possible (kids will enjoy this part), and darken their eyes etc using face paint. To make their head gear, measure a length of flat black ribbon, cut out a cardboard circle, cover with foil, hot glue on (while off child), and wear around forehead. Accessories as desired (play doctor gear etc)!
Cardboard boxes are cheap costume bases, for the last costume buy a large box big enough for child to wear (see robot on how to cut), spray paint, markers, solid colored under clothing and your favorite candy bar wrapper as a guide! Simply decorate your box using markers and spray paint (glitter is reflective, a good idea, and makes decorations pop). It's a good idea to use pencil first and lightly sketch your idea before using the markers and paint. A sweet costume that gets the idea of treats across!
