1. If you desire it, it will come; this is probably the biggest lie of all. This concept made popular by The Secret series about the Law of Attraction being that you draw to yourself what you most want is a perversion of this real law of physics. The real Law of Attraction as documented by science is that OPPOSITES attract; opposing energies will be drawn to one another and like energies will be repelled. Applying this real law of the physical world to the New Age bastardization of it means that desire attracts hunger not fulfillment.
2. The second lie is that the Universe wants you to be happy and that it will go out of its way to bring you happiness. If this fallacy had one ounce of Truth to it, Africa would not be an orphan continent being ravaged by AIDS and the Palestinians would not be dying and suffering unfathomable misery on a daily basis. This idea that the Universe is concerned with individual happiness is an extension of the narcissism of living in such a Me-centric society in North America.
3. There is a promise of fairness that is either blatantly stated or underlying the message of New Age, that some how in the end life rewards good people and punishes bad people. This lie neglects the reality that life is rarely fair and good people end up suffering the most in a world filled with greed and selfishness.
4. There is a system of blaming the individual for their lives failures and disappointments and tragedies that makes New Age so cruel; leaders and preachers of this form of self-help insist that if you're life is not what you want then you are either to blame or you're not doing 'it' right. Whatever their latest gimmick is 'it' whether its wishing with feeling or doing a chant or visualizing, the lie is if you're not getting the results you want then you're just not doing 'it' right; testimonials rave about how 'it' changed their life and the only one not doing 'it' right, is you.
5. The last lie of the New Age movement is this illusion they sell people that each is in control of all elements in life and that there is nothing out of their power to manipulate to meet their demands and desires. The truth is much of life is out of our control, we have a limited amount of control over our daily lives and no control over the lives of the people we love, life is a risk and life demands to be in control and attempts to manipulate life are to no avail because the truth is none of us are that important and our lives will contain joy as well as suffering, regardless of how many chants you do in any given day or how deeply you desire to be rich.
